Admissions

How to Apply 

To apply, submit Temple's online graduate application along with an application fee of $60.

Applicants must have completed their bachelor’s degree. A degree in a related field is preferred; however, all applications will be considered.

Candidates will be asked to submit the following along with their application.

Coursework

An applicant should hold an undergraduate degree in English or have completed equivalent coursework in English and American literature.

Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from every college and university you have attended.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation from faculty and professionals.

Statement of Goals

In approximately 600 to 1,000 words, describe your research goals, your particular interest in the Temple English graduate program and your future goals.

Standardized Test Scores

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional. Scores may be submitted if available.

The GRE Subject Exam in Literature is also optional. Scores should be submitted if available.

Résumé

A current professional résumé is required.

Writing Sample

The writing sample should be a work of literary criticism (not creative writing), approximately 12 to 15 pages in length. It should represent the best of its author's critical and writing abilities.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

For applicants whose native language is not English, the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores are required. Applicants must meet the following minimum test score requirements.

  • TOEFL iBT: 105
  • IELTS Academic: 7.0
  • PTE Academic: 72

Admissions Deadline

Fall: Feb. 15

To be considered for a teaching assistantship or fellowship, admissions materials must be submitted by Dec. 15.
