Admissions

How to Apply

To apply, submit Temple University’s application along with the $60 online application fee. Standardized tests (GRE or MAT) are not required.

Supporting Materials

  • Transcripts: Submit official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all accredited institutions you have attended and/or from which you earned credit.
  • Goals Statement: In 500–1,000 words, state your career goals and how you believe this degree will help you achieve them. Discuss the relevant experience you have obtained so far.
  • Recommendations: Submit two letters of recommendation.
  • Résumé: A current professional résumé is required.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Test scores, such as the GMAT or GRE, are optional.

Additional Materials

Academic and Musical Profile

Applicants must submit a digital video demonstrating teaching skills and musicianship. The video should be no longer than 15 minutes in duration. Students should include a brief written narrative explaining the contents of the video. A written examination to demonstrate writing skills and general knowledge about music education is also required. This examination will be scheduled by the director of graduate programs in Music Education and the applicant during the interview.

Teaching Certification

Applicants must be certified to teach by at least one state in the U.S. A copy of the teaching certificate must be submitted.

Interview

After the admissions application has been reviewed by Temple University, the applicant will be contacted by the director of graduate programs for Music Education in order to schedule an interview.

Supplementary Information

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit any additional information that will help the faculty in the admission decision. Items may include, but are not limited to

  • curriculum development material,
  • digital recordings of compositions or arrangements,
  • lesson or rehearsal plans,
  • recital performance recordings and
  • recordings of performance groups.

Admission Deadlines

While applications for the Music Education MM are taken year-round, please submit by Dec. 1 (Spring) and March 1 (Fall) for best consideration for financial assistance.
