Bachelor of Arts in Italian

Build a foundation of cultural literacy, global awareness and language proficiency with the Bachelor of Arts in Italian in Temple University’s College of Liberal Arts. This 123-credit program emphasizes critical thinking, analytical reading, and effective communication skills to help you become competitive in today’s global workplace. 

The Italian Major takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying the Italian language and culture, and students form a deep appreciation for cultural perspectives within the Italian-speaking world. Advanced language instruction helps you develop competency, fluency and retention in Italian. Literature and history coursework emphasizes Italy’s cultural, global and national identity, while cinema and media studies coursework illuminates the history, events and people that have shaped the country.

In this intimate program, you’ll benefit from small class sizes and receive the personal attention from faculty needed to develop proficiency in the language. Faculty and administrators provide support throughout the program and work collaboratively with students to realize their individual academic and professional goals.

Immerse yourself in Italian culture and society through one of Temple’s study away opportunities, including Temple University Rome. Gain a broad view of the country and its unique perspectives with classes offered in art, architecture, language and international business.

Classes & Curriculum

The Italian BA coursework hones your grammar, reading, writing and vocabulary skills, with an emphasis on cultural and literary analysis. In addition to elective courses, students also complete a minimum of two Italian writing-intensive classes.

  • Composition II: Advanced Writing Skills, 
  • Fascism and the Resistance in Italian Film and Literature,
  • Intermediate Italian I and II, 
  • Italian for Business, 
  • LGBTQ in Italian and Italian American Culture,
  • Love and Desire in Italian Film and Literature,
  • Monsters and Demons: From Dante to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and
  • The Italian Origins of Classic Fairy Tales.

Certificate Programs

The College of Liberal Arts has 22 undergraduate certificate programs for you to expand your knowledge and diversify your Temple education. Certificates can complement bachelor's programs, allowing you to specialize in an area and highlight your exposure to disciplines outside of your major.

Tuition & Fees

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, the Bachelor of Arts offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. You can view the full Cost of Attendance breakdown on the Student Financial Services website.

These tuition costs apply to the 2025–2026 academic year.

Pennsylvania resident: $19,608.00 per year
Out-of-state: $35,232.00 per year

Honors Program

The College of Liberal Arts participates in Temple’s Honors Program. Learn more about the program and how to be admitted. 

Students who meet certain academic and extracurricular criteria may become members of the following honor societies. 

  • Alpha Lambda Delta is a national society that honors academic excellence during a student's first year at college.
  • Golden Key is an international society that enables members to realize their potential through the advancement of academics, leadership and service. 
  • Phi Beta Kappa is open to juniors and seniors in the College of Liberal Arts. To qualify for Phi Beta Kappa, a student must maintain a high grade point average in a broad, rigorous program of study in the liberal arts, including mathematics and foreign languages.

Student Clubs & Organizations

Supplement your College of Liberal Arts coursework and enhance your experience at Temple with more than 300 student clubs and organizations. You’ll have opportunities to meet and network with other students, get involved with the community, grow your interests, and develop résumé-boosting skills and experiences.

The following student organizations may be of interest to students in the Italian Major.

  • The Italian Club/Società Italiana hosts Caffe Italiano twice every week, which serves as an outlet for students to practice Italian and learn about Italian culture in an informal setting. The Societa Italiana holds cooperative events with local university-based Italian clubs, including Bryn Mawr College, Drew University, Saint Joseph's University, University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania. 
  • The Language and Linguistics Club is dedicated to promoting the scientific study of language as well as assisting linguistic majors to become more involved and more informed about the field.
