Composition-Music Undergraduate Certificate

Compose original works with the Composition-Music Undergraduate Certificate in Temple’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. Coursework in music theory will form the basis for your compositions. This 13-credit certificate is available to any currently enrolled Temple University student seeking to create original pieces of music and gain knowledge of both music theory and composition. 

The Composition-Music Undergraduate Certificate provides certificate students the opportunity to experience the excitement of Temple’s Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts in a coherent disciplinary context. Through more than 500 concerts, events, lectures and performances each year, the center offers students an inclusive educational community that affirms creativity as central to society and culture.

Undergraduate students interested in the Composition-Music Undergraduate Certificate must be in good standing and have completed at least 15 credits at Temple University by the initial requested semester of certificate coursework. 

Classes & Curriculum

The certificate will be acknowledged on your official transcript when you receive your bachelor's degree provided that you successfully complete each of the following courses with a grade of C- or better. Required courses include

  • Composition I,
  • Composition II,
  • Counterpoint and
  • Topics in Music Theory.
