Admissions

How to Apply

To apply, submit Temple University’s application along with the $60 online application fee. Standardized tests (GRE or MAT) are not required.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation.

Résumé

A current professional résumé is required.

Standardized Test Scores

Test scores, such as the GMAT or GRE, are optional.

Statement of Goals

In 500–1,000 words, state your career goals and how you believe this degree will help you achieve them. Discuss the relevant experience you have obtained so far.

Transcripts

Submit official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all accredited institutions you have attended and/or from which you earned credit.

Writing Sample

Submit an undergraduate-level paper demonstrating your ability to do musical analysis and/or report research. Writing samples should be submitted through Acceptd. Your sample should include both

  • a compositional piece, such as counterpoint, a figured bass, a harmonized melody or an original composition; and

  • an analytical piece, such as a formal analysis, a harmonic analysis or a pitch-class set analysis.

International Students

Audition Requirements

Students interested in the Piano Performance and Music Theory MM program should be prepared to audition for Boyer faculty. If you live more than 150 miles from Temple’s Main Campus, you may submit a recorded audition. The following are acceptable works for your audition.

  • Contrapuntal Baroque work

  • Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert

  • Large Romantic work

  • Impressionistic or Contemporary piece

All works are to be performed from memory.
