How to Apply

Please note: Students intending to pursue the degree must complete both the Temple University Graduate Application and a portfolio interview. The applicant can interview with appropriate faculty, either through URTA at audition sites in Chicago or on Temple University's Main Campus.

University Resident Theatre Association

The Theater-Design MFA program recruits students through the National Unified Auditions and Interviews conducted by the University Resident Theatre Association (URTA) in Chicago. Interested students are encouraged to apply with the URTA when appropriate.

To apply, submit Temple's online graduate application along with an online application fee of $60. You will also need to provide the following general supporting materials.

Additional Materials

Interview

An interview is required. Top candidates from URTA are invited to interview with design faculty at Temple University. Candidates are encouraged to make a campus visit. Learn more about the interview process for Design MFA candidates.

Portfolio

A portfolio is required for the interview process. Please do not send portfolios. Portfolios should include examples of design work such as renderings, rough sketches, examples of drafting, working drawings and realized production work, or other work that demonstrates theatrical and graphic ability.

Your portfolio should include at least one complete set of design visuals for a realized production; from conception through renderings, model, drafting and light plot, to production photos of the completed work on stage. You may also include artwork, photography or other visual materials that demonstrate your imagination and abilities.
