Admissions

How to Apply

To apply, submit Temple’s application along with its $60 fee. Depending on your program of study, you may have to submit a video prescreening recording and/or scholarly paper through Acceptd and have an audition, interview and/or presentation.

Supporting Materials

  • Goals Statement: In 500 to 1,000 words, state your career goals and how you believe this degree will help you achieve them. Discuss relevant experience obtained so far.
  • Recommendations: Submit two letters of recommendation.
  • Résumé: A current professional résumé is required.
  • Standardized Test Scores: GRE or MAT scores are optional.
  • TOEFL: 100 iBT or 600 PBT minimum. A TOEFL score is required for all applicants who have not completed a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in an English-based curriculum.
  • Transcripts: Music applicants must hold a master of music degree (or the equivalent) in the field of specialization from an accredited institution. Submit official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all accredited institutions you have attended and/or from which you earned credit.

Additional Materials

Certification

All doctoral applicants must hold professional certification in music therapy.

Clinical Experience

All applicants must have five years of full-time clinical experience as a professional music therapist.

Evidence of Scholarship

Applicants should submit a paper on Music Therapy. This paper should be written in English, and demonstrate the applicant's scholarship and writing ability (published or unpublished).

Interview

Approximately three weeks after all application materials have been received, an interview is scheduled with the music therapy faculty. The interview may occur at the time of the in-person audition or may be scheduled after the applicant submits a recorded audition.

Prior Coursework

Graduate applicants who have not completed the following courses before entering the program must complete them as part of their curriculum.

  • Music in Medicine
  • Music Therapy Education and Training
  • Music Therapy Ethics
  • Qualitative Research in Music Therapy
  • Quantitative Research in Music Therapy
  • Theories of Music Psychotherapy
Supplementary Information

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit any additional information that will help the faculty in the admission decision. Items may include, but are not limited to

  • curriculum development material,
  • digital recordings of compositions or arrangements,
  • lesson or rehearsal plans,
  • recital performance recordings, and
  • recordings of performance groups.
Written Examination

An on-site written examination is required as part of the doctoral admissions process. Remedial coursework may be required. A completed MMT degree from Temple may warrant a waiver of the written examination.
