Media Studies and Production MA

Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production

Increase your knowledge of media analysis, creation and management with the Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production in the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple. Graduates are empowered to enter a broad range of careers in the world of media and digital production, or to pursue advanced research at the doctoral level.

Situated in the heart of Philadelphia, a leading center of media, art and commerce, the interdisciplinary media studies and production program connects you to a diverse urban landscape where you'll collaborate with peers and professionals to explore potential uses and impacts of media across an array of evolving technologies, platforms and practices.

Our approach to education is holistic, structured around two core principles.

  • Creative production emphasizes the cultivation of sophisticated media creators and entrepreneurs, who are empowered to develop innovative and ethical content and to sustain a career doing so.
  • Critical engagement emphasizes the intellectual comprehension of media and the understanding of their relationship to society.

Our faculty are acclaimed media scholars and accomplished professional practitioners whose work integrates theory and practice to successfully navigate the continuously evolving media-centric world. Learn more about the Media Studies and Production MA’s faculty and staff.

Is MSP more focused on creative production or academic analysis?

Both! The program blends hands-on creative experience with a deep understanding of how media shape society. Students graduate with the ability to both make media and think critically about its impact.

Does Temple require prior experience in media production before joining the MSP program?

Not at all. Many students start with little or no technical experience. The program is designed to teach you everything from the ground up — from shooting and editing to writing and research.

What are the admission requirements for the MSP program? Do I need a separate portfolio?

You apply through Temple University’s standard admissions process. There are no additional portfolio or audition requirements — just a strong academic record and an interest in media and communication.

Find Your Focus

Personalized research and professional opportunities characterize the media studies and production program, and your studies can be tailored to your individual interests. Each track focuses on a different area of the media ecosystem.

What are the concentrations available for the media studies and production program?

  • The Media Business specialization covers media management, marketing, and entrepreneurship including media publicity and advertising, corporate communication, and research.

  • The Media Production specialization focuses on storytelling, filmmaking, audio, and digital content creation. Studies cover digital platforms, multimedia production, radio, TV and emergent communication technologies.

  • The Media Analysis specialization emphasizes critical thinking, research, and policy as students examine media and technology. Use cultural, economic, historical, political and sociological lenses to explore the behavior and management of communication systems.

What makes MSP different from other communication or film programs?

MSP combines the creative, commercial, and analytical sides of media in one program. You’ll gain both hands-on production skills and a strong foundation in business and entrepreneurship, media theory, and media literacy, making you adaptable in an ever-changing industry.

Additionally, Philadelphia is a major media and cultural hub with countless opportunities for internships, creative collaborations, and real-world experience. You’ll study in a city filled with production houses, news outlets, arts organizations, and tech startups.

What kind of portfolio or demo reel should I have after graduating?

While at Temple you'll develop a professional portfolio that showcases your writing samples, and production work; and on TUTV you’ll earn professional credits that will help after graduation with professional organization and union memberships. Faculty and advisors help students polish their reels and resumes for internships and jobs.

What type of jobs do graduates of the media studies and production program pursue?

Graduates of the media studies and production program go on to careers in media production and post-production, content strategy, audience research, digital media management, public media, and communications roles across nonprofit, corporate, and creative sectors. Some also continue on to pursue doctoral study, and many have launched successful careers at companies like NBC, SiriusXM, and Meta — or started their own creative ventures.

Are there student organizations or media clubs I can join at Temple?

Students can join Temple Update, WHIP Radio, The Temple News, Temple TV and any of its student-produced programs (including La Charla, Queer Temple, Temple Tonight, and more), or other student-run organizations to gain experience in writing, broadcasting, and production.

Are there opportunities for students to work on real media projects or collaborate with local companies?

Yes. Students often work on media projects for community organizations (e.g., Philly Youth Media Collaborative, the Ryan Seacrest Studio at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia), local businesses (e.g., WHYY-TV and radio, WXPN / World Café), and campus partners. Many classes offer real-world production environments and client-based work.
