The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $1 million grant to College of Science and Technology Dean Miguel Mostafá and his research group for advancing their work in high-energy astrophysics.
Their research will use the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC)—a world-renowned facility in Mexico designed to detect cosmic rays and gamma rays at the highest energies—to answer fundamental questions about how nature accelerates particles to energies far beyond those achievable on Earth.
The grant will also allow for training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, expanding pathways for them into physics, data science and astronomy. Additionally, the group will engage in outreach efforts to increase participation in science, inspiring future researchers.
“This award underscores the role Temple plays in cutting-edge astrophysics,” said Mostafá. “We are excited to continue building collaborations worldwide and contribute to a deeper understanding of the universe."
