A commemoration of Temple coaching legend John Chaney, as told by the people whose lives he touched.

Growing up in the Philadelphia region as a college basketball fan during the late ’80s and ’90s, I — like nearly everyone in the region — rooted for Temple. 

John Chaney, Temple University’s formidable and legendary men’s basketball coach for decades, has died at 89.

John Chaney, the famously combative Hall of Fame coach who took Temple University to 17 N.C.A.A. basketball tournaments, largely recruiting high school players from poor neighborhoods who were overlooked by the college game’s national powers, died on Friday. He was 89.

I came to Philadelphia in 1995, just a farm boy with a fancy diploma. Within a year of my arrival, I met both Michael Jordan and John Chaney.
