The Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is a post-master’s program designed specifically for working certified physician assistants so they can gain the doctoral training required to participate in patient advocacy, policymaking and administration. Graduates will also be prepared to educate master’s students who are training at the doctoral level. Providers in the program will develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to lead in healthcare.

Why earn the DMSc from the Katz School of Medicine at Temple? 

The Doctor of Medical Science program trains certified physician assistants to become dynamic leaders and educators in healthcare and integrate their clinical expertise in areas such as public health and clinical research. The program is offered completely online, allowing current professionals to pursue their doctorate while continuing to practice. Students will have the option to pursue one of two concentrations: Health Justice and Teaching in Health Science Education. 

Doctor of Medical Science Program Outcomes 

Physician assistants who graduate from the program will be ready to advance in the following areas.

  • Educate master’s degree-trained health professionals who receive additional training at a doctoral level.
  • Educate master’s degree-trained health professionals to be leaders and advocates in mental and health science fields.
  • Educate students who are skilled in critical thinking, reflective and culturally competent practice-based education.
  • Educate health professionals—prepared at the doctoral level—to evaluate and apply the best scientific evidence as it relates to clinical practice in a healthcare setting.
  • Educate health professionals who demonstrate a high level of understanding of health equity, social justice and public health needs in the current healthcare setting.
  • Promote a collaborative academic community of students, faculty and clinical instructors committed to lifelong learning, clinical excellence, scholarly pursuits and professionalism that will meet the future health needs of society.

Program Format and Curriculum 

The doctoral curriculum will be delivered in an online format for all courses. Courses will be offered in the evening synchronously and asynchronously to accommodate clinically practicing healthcare providers.

  • Health Care Policy and Economics Critical Social Science and Urban Bioethics  

Courses in the Teaching in Health Science Education concentration include the following. 

  • Foundations of Teaching and Learning in Biomedical and Health Sciences Education
  • Assessment and Remediation in Health Science Education
  • Curriculum Design in Health Science Education

Concentrations

This degree program can be completed with or without a concentration. Your concentration options include

  • Health Justice

    Study, understand and address inequities in public health across underserved populations to transform healthcare policy and access to treatment. In this concentration, students identify inequities such as race, geography, class, gender identity and sexual orientation; how these inequities are perpetuated in society; and the skills necessary for advocacy and policy.

  • Teaching in Health Science Education

    Form the expertise required for residents and medical students to become educators and influence the next generation of health science professionals. The program’s curriculum provides the training and foundation for designing curricula and courses, evaluation and assessment, teaching strategies, and more.
