Research in the College of Liberal Arts provides graduate students opportunities to collaborate and lead initiatives that span the humanities, social sciences and STEM fields. As a public research institution, Temple equips its students with the tools and opportunities they need to pursue original ideas and create real, sustainable change in the world.

Research Facilities

Graduate students in Temple’s College of Liberal Arts have access to the following state-of-the-art, collaborative research centers and institutes.

  • Housed within the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, the Center for Asian Health seeks to reduce health disparities and improve health equity among underserved Asian Pacific Americans and other diverse health disparity populations. 
  • The Center for the Humanities at Temple is an interdisciplinary forum for scholarship and intellectual inquiry in the humanities, intended to bridge the disciplinary divide between departments and colleges.
  • The Public Policy Lab is home to researchers who study public policies and the social processes relevant to their development and consequences.
  • The Temple University Brain Research and Imaging Center is an interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the study of neurological biology and behavior. 
  • The University Community Collaborative prepares and supports youth and young adults to become confident, effective leaders, and it creates cultures that value and integrate the contributions of youth with the goal of building stronger communities.

Department Research

Temple’s Criminal Justice Department is a robust community of curious intellectuals and passionate changemakers. Students and faculty work together on interdisciplinary and multi-method inquiries that make a real difference to policy and practice at a local, regional, national and international level. 

Areas of research conducted within the department include criminology, geography, history, experimental psychology, social psychology, social work, sociology and social ecology. 

While some graduate students are exploring rehabilitation and behavioral change, others are studying police-community relations, youth crime and the geography of crime.

THE CENTER FOR SECURITY AND CRIME SCIENCE

The Center for Security and Crime Science is the first center in the United States devoted to crime science. The Center seeks to address multiple levels of security concerns and engages in projects, often in partnership with law enforcement agencies, to examine those crimes which occur most frequently and use that information to develop policy options which close them off. This approach can work to reduce both the inclination and the opportunity to commit crime.
