As dangerously hot temperatures continue to rise across Philadelphia, Temple University police officers and Owl Ambassadors joined together on Tuesday to launch Operation: Fan-tastic Tuesday.
“It is a scorcher of a day,” said Temple University Police Captain Enoch McCoy. “That’s why we’re out here, checking on our North Philadelphia neighbors, giving them new fans, and making sure they’re feel safe and supported.”
The community outreach initiative took place at Jefferson Manor, located just off campus along North 10th Street, where police and student volunteers distributed free portable fans and shared summer heat safety information with residents. The fans were donated by Norton Towing.
Safety recommendations included staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and spending time in cooler environments when possible.
“We want neighbors, especially seniors and those without air conditioning, to have resources that can help them feel comfortable,” said Joshua Nussbaum, deputy director of emergency management. “It can be very hard for the body to cool, so it’s important people are reminded of these resources as we prepare for hot days ahead.”
Temple police officers and students spent time speaking with neighbors, making sure they’re aware of symptoms associated with heat exhaustion and heat stroke, including dizziness, fatigue, nausea, heavy sweating and confusion. People who are experiencing symptoms of a heat-related emergency were encouraged to seek medical attention immediately and call 911.
But students hope the fans help to avoid that situation.
“It’s Temple’s mission to uplift one another. So it’s rewarding and a privilege to give back,” said Keira Fleckenstein, a junior public relations major.
“It’s a blessing,” neighbor Beverly White said. “We thank Temple and it’s a blessing because with this heat about to rise, you don’t know what people have. So it’s a blessing because it’s going to be hot!”
