Teaching a Second and Foreign Language

Master of Science in Education

General Statement

The M.S. in Ed. in Teaching a Second and Foreign Language meets the specific educational needs of local, national, and international English as a Second Language (ESL) and foreign language teachers. Focused studies on second language issues and foreign language teaching allow graduates of this program to educate an increasingly multilingual population of students.

Admissions Requirement

A bachelor's degree, a personal goal statement, official transcripts of all previous college or university work (including Temple University), three letters of recommen-dation, and scores from either the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) are required of all applicants. A minimum TOEFL score of 230 on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version is required for applicants who are not native speakers of English. See Graduate School and College guidelines for additional information.

Most of the students admitted will already hold initial (Instructional I) certification or will not pursue a Pennsylvania teaching certification.

Degree Requirements

The M.S. in Ed. in Teaching a Second and Foreign Language requires students to complete 30 graduate credits in the following distribution: 18 credits of required courses, six credits of elective second and foreign language courses, and six credits of electives outside of the second and foreign language program. Students in the Teaching a Second and Foreign Language area are required to complete a written comprehensive examination.
