All graduate programs in the department are designed to improve and enhance curriculum, instruction, and learning in all types of settings. The programs accomplish this by preparing expert teachers and education and curriculum specialists in the following ways: conducting and disseminating scholarly research, especially research on the improvement of schools and classroom instruction; and providing service to the regional, national, and international communities. Degree Programs The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology in Education offers three graduate degrees: Master of Education (Ed.M.), Master of Science in Education (M.S. in Ed.), and Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). Areas of specialization within each degree program are described below. See the Tyler School of Art section for information regarding the Master of Education with a major in Art (Ed.M.) and the Master of Education with a major in Art and Teaching Certification (Ed.M.). Applications for the Master of Education and Master of Science degrees are processed upon receipt of complete credentials according to the following application deadline: for fall admittance - April 1; for spring admittance - October 1; for summer admittance - March 1. Completed applications for the Doctor of Education degree, including all test scores and letters of recommendation, must be received in the Student Services Office by March 1 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester. Financial Aid University Fellowships and graduate assistantships are available to admitted (matriculated) and qualified full-time degree students. Applications must be made to the Department Chair and should be submitted by the end of January to be considered for either a graduate assistantship or for a University Fellowship. General Statement The Graduate Certification Master of Education Program (Ed.M.) is intended for students interested in pursuing state certification simultaneously with their master's degree. This program prepares people for careers in education who have not previously been certified in any state to teach, with the exception of the Reading specialization. Individuals seeking a Pennsylvania Intern and/or Instructional I certificate who hold a B.S. or B.A. degree in a non-education area should apply. If an applicant already holds an Instructional I or II certificate, see the M.S. in Ed. program. After completing supervised teaching and its prerequisites, passing the relevant sections of the National Teachers' Examinations, and passing a State of Pennsylvania criminal check, students may be eligible for a Pennsylvania Intern Certificate. The Intern Certificate allows the student to teach in public schools for up to three years. The Intern Certificate is issued only once and expires automatically in three years; no extensions are granted. Upon the successful completion of all requirements for the degree and certification requirements, students may apply for a Pennsylvania Instructional I Teaching Certificate. Temple University offers a Five-year Teacher Education Program that is an undergraduate minor in Education plus a master's degree in Education (Ed.M.). This program allows Temple students to enroll in a bachelor's degree with a minor in education, while simultaneously working on a major outside of education. Usually during freshman or sophomore year, students meet with the coordinator of this program to complete an application of intent and declare a minor in education. The graduate portion of the program takes place in the fifth year, and consists of 30 graduate credit hours. While the admissions standards and certification eligibility remain the same as the general admissions requirements to the Graduate School and the Pennsylvania Intern and/or Instructional I certification, admissions and degree requirements for the various specializations differ. Please request and review the CITE Five-year Teacher Education Program Handbook for further information. Areas of Specialization The Ed.M. prepares students for certification in five areas: Elementary/Early Childhood, Reading, Secondary, Special Education and Vocational-Technical Education. The subject areas of the Secondary specialization are English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, Mathematics (beginning with Calculus), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, General Science and Social Studies. The subspecialty areas of Vocational-Technical Education are Business Education, Industrial Education and Marketing Education. Admissions and Degree Requirements A bachelor's degree, a personal goal statement, official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate college or university work (including Temple University), three letters of recommendation, and scores from either the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) are required of all applicants. A minimum TOEFL score of 230 on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version is required for applicants who are not native speakers of English. See Graduate School and College guidelines for additional information. Please contact the appropriate CITE department for specific requirements to complete the Ed.M. degree for the five areas of specialization. At the end of the program, all students in each specialization must pass the Master's Comprehensive Examination.
