Special Notes for the Ed.M.: All students in the Graduate Certification Program must be available to teach full time for one semester. Students who obtain acceptable paid teaching positions during the academic year will be supervised for one semester at that site. Travel restrictions may apply for supervisors visiting schools beyond a thirty-mile radius of Main Campus. Students who do not obtain paid teaching positions will be placed in a school but will not be paid for their teaching activities. All students requiring school placement for ED 406, Supervised Teaching, must apply one semester in advance. Contact the Office of School Placement in the CITE Department for an application and deadline dates.

Temple University does not find paid teaching positions for Graduate Certification Program students. While the program will assist in job counseling and the transmission of job leads, the program DOES NOT GUARANTEE its participants a teaching position. This remains the responsibility of the individual student.

Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology in Education

Master of Science in Education

General Statement

The M.S. in Ed. is available for students who are already certified and/or have a master's degree. It is a graduate level teacher enhancement program for certified B.S./B.A./Ed.M. professionals seeking to upgrade their content area and/or develop new skills leading to educational opportunities such as: master/lead teacher, curriculum developer, peer counselor, and/or instructional/team leader. The M.S. in Ed. is an advanced degree, preparing professionals for higher level positions within the school system and/or a more in-depth knowledge of one's field.

Areas of Specialization

The areas of concentration are: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Mathematics and Science Education, Inclusive School Practice, and Career and Technical Education. CITE also offers an general option in the M.S. in Ed., which allows the department and students to design specialized programs within the discipline and to provide specialized programs requested by neighboring school districts and individual students.

Admissions Requirements

A bachelor's degree, a personal goal statement, official transcripts of all previous college or university work (including Temple University), three letters of recommen-dation, and scores from either the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) are required of all applicants. A minimum TOEFL score of 230 on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version is required for applicants who are not native speakers of English. See Graduate School and College guidelines for additional information.

Each specialization has prerequisites that assure faculty that admitted students have the necessary background for study in that area. Please request and review program literature from the CITE department before applying.

For Career and Technical Education candidates, work experience in an appropriate business or technical area such as Business, Marketing, Industry, and/or Technical Training is required. Most of the students admitted already will hold a Pennsylvania Instructional I Certification and plan to pursue permanent certification, or will plan to pursue a doctoral program upon completion of the M.S. in Ed.
