In addition, the IMBA staff meets twice yearly with Professional Advisory Boards of senior multinational executives in Paris and Philadelphia. These executives provide guidance for the faculty in shaping the curriculum in anticipation of new developments and the needs of potential employers.

A special joint M.B.A.-M.S. in International Business Administration is available only to those in the IMBA program. The joint degree requires just one additional semester at Temple, during which students may concentrate in selected areas of business, e.g., finance, marketing. Effective in Spring 1999, a special concentrated certificate program designed to enable students who lack the business core to qualify for admission to the IMBA was launched in Paris. It will be offered annually

Admission Requirements

Admission to the IMBA is very competitive because of the limited enrollment, and participants are chosen with care. Decisions are based on a combination of factors, including scores on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for non-native English speakers, undergraduate grade point average, geographical distribution, experience, and personal interviews (either by phone or in person). The only absolute among the above is the University's minimum requirement of 230 score on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 score on the paper-based version on the TOEFL. While no specific experience or language requirements exist, obviously they are factors that are considered. There is a separate application form for the IMBA program.

Because of the special nature of the IMBA, all course credits must be taken within the program. Previous graduate work in business may enhance performance in the program, but credits are not transferable.

Joint M.B.A./M.S. in Healthcare Management/Healthcare Financial Management

Direct inquiries to: Dr. Thomas Getzen,
Director, (215) 204-6826, 329 Speakman Hall, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122.
E-mail: getzen@astro.ocis.temple.edu

Program Goals

Students who enroll in this program complete all of the requirements for the M.B.A. in Healthcare Management and the M.S. in Healthcare Financial Management. Graduates of this unique program not only will receive an in-depth exposure to healthcare financial management, but also will be cognizant of the organization, management, and delivery of healthcare services in a wide variety of settings. Completion of the combined M.B.A.-M.S. program will take at least five semesters.

Students may enroll on either a full-time or part-time basis. However, in applying, each applicant must designate the specific program of interest. (M.B.A. students may apply for the combined M.B.A and M.S. program during the first year of full-time study.)

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements are the same as those for the M.B.A. and M.S. degrees except where noted. Students must have earned accredited undergraduate degrees and meet the admission standards of SBM.

Curriculum

Core

Students must demonstrate proficiency in basic business administration subjects and research skills before proceeding to advanced work. The core requirements are the same as for the M.B.A.-M.S. programs, except that Healthcare Management students take HA 500, Medical Care Organizations, in place of Marketing 401.

Advanced

In the advanced portion of the program, students will be expected to complete the following, at a minimum:

  • Three Accounting Courses (550, 551, 552);
  • Three Healthcare Management courses;
  • Two Finance courses (516 and elective approved by the director);
  • One Risk Management and Insurance course;
  • A minimum of 12 s.h. of electives, with at least two electives outside the healthcare/financial management area.

A student may substitute a research paper for two electives, with departmental approval. Additional requirements can be found in the Healthcare Management Student Handbook. Each student participates in two three-month full-time residencies, one in administration and one in financial management. These will be at healthcare related organizations.

Master of Science -Actuarial Science

Direct inquiries to: Dr. Michael Powers,
Director, M.S. Actuarial Science Program,
Room 479 Ritter Annex, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122, (215) 204-7293.
E-mail: powersmr@astro.ocis.temple.edu

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the program must hold a bachelor's or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university and must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.8 or better overall and 3.0 in the last two years.

Applicants for the program must submit scores from either the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). For a successful applicant, the percentiles on the verbal and quantitative components of the GRE typically fall within the following percentile ranges:

  • Verbal: 50 to 99
  • Quantitative: 80 to 99

Passage of the first professional actuarial examination can be used to offset a marginal quantitative percentile score.

International students whose native language is not English must submit scores on the TOEFL examination. The minimum score is 230 on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version, and the typical score is above 250 CBT or 600 paper based.

Special consideration will be given to any student with outstanding mathematics credentials, such as uniformly excellent grades as an undergraduate mathematics major or passage of one or more of the professional actuarial examinations.

Two letters of recommendation and a statement of goals are required.

Admission is competitive. The applicant's academic record and test scores are given the highest weight in the admission process, although other factors are also taken into account.
