F. Performing Ensembles 1. Touring -All students in touring performing ensembles are required to participate in all scheduled tours. These tours, usually one or two weeks in length, often take place immediately after termination of semesters. Students must arrange their schedules to accommodate this requirement. 2. Participation -String majors (except Guitar) at the master's level must perform in the orchestra each semester they receive lessons. Master's degree candidates in wind, brass, and percussion instruments must be available for ensemble assignments at the discretion of the Department Chair, including participation beyond curricular requirements. 3. Non-Credit Participation -With special permission, graduate students for whom there is no ensemble requirement, or where previous ensemble credits exceed the graduation requirement, may participate in choral and instrumental ensembles without cost, with prior permission from the ensemble director, the department chair, and the Associate Dean. Master of Music Degree and Master of Music Therapy Degree Degree Requirements 1. Requirements -The master's degree is awarded upon the successful completion of a minimum of 30 - 36 semester hours of graduate work (depending on curriculum) and the qualifying examination. Candidates in Music Education, Music History, and Music Theory must submit a final written project, credits for which are in addition to the 30 credit minimum required for the degree. Candidates in Music Therapy must complete a comprehensive examination and two independent projects in music therapy for a total of 36 semester hours of credit. 2. Advisers Each student who has received acceptance as a degree candidate in music will be assigned an adviser who will guide the program of study. Special care will be taken to adapt the program to the student's particular needs. 3. Diagnostic Tests -Before registering for the first semester of graduate study in music, each student in the master's program is required to take a series of diagnostic tests. The purpose of these examinations is to determine possible deficiencies in undergraduate preparation. Acceptance to a degree progr 4. Keyboard Proficiency Exam -Candidates in Composition, Music Education, Music History, Music Theory, Music Therapy, Opera, and Voice must take an examination in piano before graduation. See "Proficiency Examinations." Credits With special prior approval, a maximum of six semester hours may be transferred from other accredited institutions. At the discretion of the respective departments, candidates in non-performance curricula will be permitted to accumulate a maximum of six semester hours of credit in applied music (subject to appropriate fees) as part of their degree programs. With the approval of the major adviser, a maximum of six semester hours of credit may be earned in subject areas outside the Esther Boyer College of Music, except in the Master of Music Therapy program. All work must be completed within a period of six years. Ensemble Credits - Graduate performance majors in classical guitar, wind, brass, and percussion instruments are required to perform for credit in an instrumental ensemble during a minimum of two semesters of their course of study. Four additional ensemble credits may be taken as electives toward a degree with permission from the student's adviser. In no case may more than 6 credits of ensemble count toward a master's degree. Students must be available for ensemble String Majors -All string majors (with the exception of classical guitar) are required to play in the Esther Boyer College of Music Orchestra during each semester in which lessons are taken for credit. Violin, Viola, and Cello majors must take four additional credits of Chamber Music or other ensemble, as assigned by the Department. Double Bass majors must take two additional credits of Chamber Music or other ensemble, as assigned by the Department. Further elective credit for string majors must be taken outside the performance core of lessons and ensembles. In no case may more than 8 credits of ensemble count toward a master's degree. Students must be available for ensemble assignments at the discretion of the Department Chair, including participation beyond curricular requirements. Course Work: Master's Degrees The Master of Music degree is granted upon the completion of 30-33 s.h. (depending on curriculum), exclusive of master's final written project. Master's degrees require that at least one third of the credits be in academic coursework. These academics may include Research 700, Seminar in Theoretical or Stylistic Analysis, and at least one other academic course from the departments of Music History, Theory, Composition, or Music Education, for which the major adviser has given approval. Other courses may be acceptable with approval of the adviser and Associate Dean. For specific course requirements and/or an audition, write directly to the chair of the particular department. The distribution of course work is as follows: Choral Conducting: 16 s.h. in Choral Conducting and Choral Literature; 2 s.h. Advanced Choral Conducting 491; 6 s.h. of electives; 3 s.h. in Research in Music 700; 3 s.h. in Seminar in Theoretical or Stylistic Analysis; 2 s.h. in Choral Ensemble (four semesters participation required). Functional keyboard and vocal facility required. Composition: 12 s.h.in composition seminar 540; 9 s.h. in Theoretical and/or Stylistic Analysis; 7 s.h. of electives (Canon and Fugue, Schenkerian Theory, Film Music, Aesthetics, Research, Improvisation, Music History and Music Theory are recommended); 2 s.h. in Digital Synthesis. Reading knowledge of a foreign language is expected. If a deficiency exists, students may be required to take up to two semesters of a foreign language. Harpsichord: 12 s.h. in Applied Harpsichord, 2 s.h. in Seminar in Early Keyboard Instruments (I) 496, 3 s.h. in Baroque Keyboard Performance Practice 777, 1 s.h. in Harpsichord Tuning and Maintenance, 3 s.h. in Research in Music 700, 2 s.h. in Ensembles, 7 s.h. in electives. Suggested electives include Music 497, Music 778, Music 567, music history, music theory, special topics, and graduate seminars. Music Education: 18 s.h. in Research in Music Education 670, Foundations of Music Education 650, one course in Music Technology (3 s.h.), one course or workshop in some aspect of music in the elementary or secondary school (3 s.h.), Learning Theory in Music 683, and Measurement and Evaluation in Music 641; 3 s.h. in an elective course or workshop; 9 s.h. in a combination of Music History, Music Theory, or applied areas. Additionally, a minimum of 2 s.h. of final written project must be completed. Music History: 12 s.h. in Music History; 3 s.h. in Research in Music 700; 6 s.h. in Music Theory; 1 s.h. of final written project 797; 9 s.h. of electives (2 s.h. in Early Music Ensembles or another collegiate ensemble is recommended, 6 s.h. of applied music at the graduate level or up to 6 s.h. of courses outside the field of music also may be chosen). Language Requirement -Reading knowledge of a foreign language is expected. If a deficiency exists, students may be required to take up to four semesters of a foreign language. |
