Degree Programs1. The Master of Music degree is offered in the following areas:

Professional Studies The Professional Studies Program is a non-degree, certificate program for students who hold a master's degree in performance, but for whom the College's doctoral program in performance is not suitable. The deadline for fall semester consideration for all graduate programs in music, except Choral Conducting and Music Therapy, is August 15. However, all applicants interested in scholarship and/or assistantship consideration have earlier deadlines. (See "Financial Aid") The deadline for Choral Conducting applicants is February 1 for fall semester admission consideration. Applicants in Music Therapy are advised to complete auditions prior to May 1st for fall admission consideration. The deadline for spring semester consideration for all graduate programs in music, except Music Therapy, is December 15. Music Therapy applicants are advised to submit applications and complete auditions prior to November 1st for spring admission consideration. Financial Aid In addition to financial aid awarded through the Office of Student Financial Services, the Boyer College of Music offers a number of teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships, apprenticeships, doctoral fellowships, and tuition remission scholarships. Doctoral applicants must be admitted to Temple University by February 1 for Doctoral Fellowship consideration, and have applied by March 1 for all other forms of scholarships. Choral Conducting applicants must apply by February 1 for priority scholarship consideration. All other graduate programs must apply by March 1 for priority scholarship consideration. Non-Matriculated Enrollment Qualified students may elect to complete a maximum of nine semester hours of graduate study (excluding private lessons) as a non-matriculated student before committing to a particular degree program. Accreditation The Esther Boyer College of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Middle States Association, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Music Therapy Association, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Admissions Requirements A. All Programs 1. Application and Fee -Make formal application on the form obtainable from the Esther Boyer College of Music. A $40 non-refundable application fee is required. A completed application is required to be on file prior to scheduling an audition. 2. Academic Records -Every applicant must submit one certified copy of official academic records from every college and university previously attended, including Temple University. Consult the Graduate Application booklet for specific details. All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate Bachelor of Music degree at Temple University, which is based on a curriculum of 125 to 136 hours. Doctoral candidates must hold the Master of Music degree (or the equivalent) in the field of specialization from an accredited institution. Applicants who are accepted for admission with deficiencies will find the deficiencies noted in the letter of admission. Deficiencies must be removed prior to completion of the degree. 3. Letters of Recommendation -Every applicant must submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation. (Students holding a bachelor's degree from the Esther Boyer College of Music conferred within the previous twelve months are exempt from this requirement.) 4. Statement of Professional Plans and Goals -All applicants are required to submit a one-page statement of professional plans and goals. Consult the Graduate Application booklet for specific details. 5. Audition -An audition is required for all applicants in Choral Conducting, Music Therapy, Opera, Performance (instrumental, keyboard, vocal), Piano Accompanying, and String Pedagogy. (see "Auditions.") Applicants in Composition, Music Education, Music History, and Music Theory are not required to audition for acceptance to a graduate program in the College. 6. GRE/MAT Requirements -Doctoral applicants in Music Education and Composition must submit scores from either the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). GRE/MAT scores are not required for Master's and Professional Studies applicants, nor for DMA applicants in Performance. 7. TOEFL Scores -Graduate students for whom English is not the native language are required to take the TOEFL examination regardless of U.S. residency/citizenship status. The minimum score for all majors, except Performance, is 230 on the computer-based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version. Applicants in performance will be considered for admission with TOEFL scores of 197 CBT/525 paper based or higher. Any non-native speaker of English admitted with a TOEFL score below 250 CBT/600 paper based must pass the SPEAK test prior to enrolling or take an English skills course during the first semester at Temple University. 8. Interview -Interviews are required for the following degree programs: Master of Music Therapy, Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education.
