B. Additional Departmental Application Requirements

1. Composition -Applicants must submit with the admission application evidence of compositional activity. Any compositions submitted will be returned to the applicant. If an applicant has enrolled in the Seminar in Composition prior to his or her application for formal admission to the program in Composition, the work accomplished there may serve to meet this entrance requirement, if satisfactory.

2. Music History and Music Theory -Applicants must submit with the application for admission an undergraduate-level paper demonstrating the applicant's ability to do musical analysis and/or report research.

3. Music Therapy -Applicants are required to have a personal interview. Interviews may be arranged after the student has submitted an application for admission by contacting the Coordinator of Music Therapy. For those living too distant to appear in person, an audition tape and telephone interview may be acceptable. Admission by taped audition is contingent pending a subsequent live audition by the Music Therap

4. Doctoral candidates should consult the section of this Bulletin pertaining to the specific degree program of interest for any special departmental admission requirements.

C. Admission Criteria

Due to the large number of applications for admission and the competitive nature of its music programs, the College admits only a portion of its applicants. In addition to the general admissions credentials required of all Temple University graduate applicants, Esther Boyer College of Music's specialized admission criteria (i.e., auditions, portfolios, interviews, recommendations, departmental term papers, and standardized examinations) are very heavily weighted in Esther Boyer College of Music admission decisions. Graduate applicants may be rejected for admission for failing to obtain the required level of proficiency in any one area of the specialized admission criteria regardless of the level of success in meeting the Temple University general admission criteria. In addition to the level of success demonstrated in the above-mentioned criteria, a final admission factor is the College's Optimum Enrollment Policy. This Policy may preclude the admission of any student who meets the minimum requirements of both the general and specialized admission criteria.

Optimum Enrollment Policy

The Esther Boyer College of Music strives to balance enrollment so that departments can provide superior instruction to all students granted admission. Thus, diverse factors such as ensemble rotations, department size, and available resources may influence admissions decisions.

Auditions

A. Master's Degrees

Applicants for the Master of Music degree with a major in Choral Conducting, Music Therapy, Opera, Performance (instrumental, keyboard, vocal), Piano Accompanying, and String Pedagogy must be auditioned by a department committee.
