Course Descriptions

3.  To maintain satisfactory academic progress in the program, students must pass a written Departmental Examination in Music Education after 24 credit hours have been completed. This examination is in addition to the Entrance Examination, explained above.

4.  A student may waive up to 18 credit  hours of coursework by meeting two criteria

a.The student has taken graduate courses comparable to those waived.

b.The student has passed, on the first attempt, the portion of the doctoral entrance examination that corresponds to the courses waived (history, theory, music education).

5.  Up to 12 s.h. of transfer credit may be transferred from another university with approval of the Department Chair, the Associate Dean, and the Dean of the Graduate School. Credits counting toward transfer must not have been used to meet Master's degree requirements.

6. The combination of advanced standing and transferred credits cannot exceed 18 graduate credits; that is, at least 42 graduate credits must be earned at Temple University beyond the M.M. degree.

7.  Continuous registration of at least 3 s.h. must be maintained each semester, fall and spring, but not summer, from the time of acceptance until the completion of all course work. Leaves of absence must be approved by the adviser, the Department Chair, and the Associate Dean of the Esther Boyer College of Music.

Degree Candidacy Requirements

1.  Evidence of master's project approved by   the doctoral adviser.

2.  Completion of at least one pre-  dissertation article suitable for   publication in a refereed journal.

3.  Successful completion of a written preliminary examination during the last semester of coursework. Written approval for taking the examination must be granted by the adviser, and forwarded to the Associate Dean. Doctoral preliminary examinations are administered several times each year. Students planning to take the written examinations should request a list of dates from the Graduate Secretary and submit a written request to the Associate Dean one month prior to the administration date.

4.  Oral Preliminary Examination. For those students who pass the written preliminary examination, no oral preliminary examination will be required. (This refers only to the oral preliminary examination and does not refer in any way to the oral defense of the dissertation.) If a student fails one or more portions of the written preliminary examination, an oral examination may be administered by the adviser and a minimum of two additional faculty members to be selected as follows: in the case of failure in one subject area, two members of that department will be asked by the student's adviser to participate with the major adviser in the examination. In the case of failure in more than one subject area, at least one faculty member from each of the departments in which the failure occurred will be asked by the student's major adviser to participate in the examination. The examination is to be a formal oral examination rather than an informal meeting with graduate faculty from departments in which the examination revealed that the student needs further work. This does not preclude such informal meetings, however, in preparation for the oral examination. Upon passing the oral examination, the student as advised by the examining committee, will be permitted to schedule a second and final attempt at the failed portions of the written examination.

5.  Appointment of the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC). Students work with the Major Adviser (with or without the assistance of ME699) to prepare a proposal. With the knowledge of the Major Adviser, the student may consult other faculty. During that time the student may want to ask faculty to consider serving on the DAC, pending a later reading of the complete proposal. When the student, in consultation with the Major Adviser, has identified a tentative advisory committee, the Major Adviser gives those names to the Director of Graduate Studies for consideration. The Director of Graduate Studies officially appoints the DAC. The DAC consists of no fewer than three persons: the student's Major Adviser, a second person from the department, and a third person from outside the department.

6.  Completion of a proposal for the dissertation. When the Major Adviser and student agree that the proposal is ready, the student solicits comments and tentative approval of the proposal from the other DAC members. Then the student arranges with the Department Chair for a Departmental Proposal Review (DPR) to be held at a future department meeting. Upon requesting a DPR, the student gives copies of the proposal to the Department Chair to distribute to faculty. (Students should consult with the Major Adviser or Department Chair for additional procedures regarding the DPR.) After a proposal has passed departmental review, the student prepares a revised copy - in consultation with the Major Adviser, who signs on the first line of the title page - then presents that copy to the other members of the DAC for approval and signatures. Once all DAC members have signed the title page, the student copies the final proposal and delivers within thirty days one copy to each member of the DAC, the Department Chair, the Associate Dean, and the Graduate School.

7. Continuous registration of at least 1 s.h. in Dissertation 999 must be maintained each semester, spring and fall, but not summer, from the time of completion of the preliminary examination until graduation. Doctoral candidates are required to register for a minimum of six credit hours of dissertation research during their program as a whole.

Graduation Requirements

1.  When the dissertation is complete, the Major Adviser asks the Director of Graduate Studies to appoint an outside reader. The DAC plus the outsider reader comprise the Doctoral Examining Committee (DEC) for the dissertation defense.

2.  Doctoral candidates must schedule a defense of the dissertation with the Associate Dean at least one month before the requested defense date. Forms to schedule the defense are available from the Graduate Secretary.

3.  Doctoral candidates must submit a defense copy of the dissertation to members of the DEC and to the Associate Dean at least two weeks prior to the defense.

4.  Filing of the application for graduation before the stated deadline.

5.  Completion of all requirements, including the dissertation, within seven years from the time of acceptance to graduate standing. Exceptions to the above requirements may be made only with the approval of the adviser, department chairperson, Associate Dean, and when required, the Graduate School or the appropriate collegial or university committee.
