Geology

The Department of Geology offers a Master of Science degree.  The principal function of the degree program is the training of students either to fill entry-level positions in industry and government or to prepare for Ph.D. level graduate work.  Students accepted into this program will have the opportunity to study stratigraphy, paleopedology and modern soils, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, environmental geology, and hydrology.  Graduates of the program have been very successful in securing positions in industry and government as well as being accepted into doctoral programs.

The master's degree requires 24 credits, including written and oral qualifying exams.  An original research thesis is required.  The target completion period is two years and typical completion times range from two to two and one half years.  Full-time status is encouraged.  The program is based on the Main campus and offers numerous field work and lab research opportunities both nationally and internationally.   Opportunities for interdisciplinary work are available through an environmental center.
