The Department of Health Studies offers graduate work in Health Education and in Therapeutic Recreation leading to the Master of Education, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The department seeks to advance and disseminate new knowledge in the multi-disciplinary applied social-behavioral health sciences. The Department's scholarly mission emphasizes advancing the principles and practices of health education and therapeutic recreation by creating and evaluating applied interventions, programs, curricula, and policies designed to improve health status and quality of life. The Department of Health Studies also has as its mission to contribute to the rapidly changing knowledge base in the applied social-behavioral health sciences. This mission is reflected in a commitment to conduct basic and applied research and to contribute to national, state, and regional policy bodies and service systems that are actively involved in the delivery of Health Education and Therapeutic Recreation. Likewise, the Department of Health Studies has central to its mission a commitment to diversity that promotes equal access to all qualified applicants and makes diversity in its faculty and student body a primary goal. Areas of Concentration For the Master of Education, students may concentrate their studies in either School Health Education or in Therapeutic Recreation. For the Master of Public Health, the concentration is Community Health Education. The Doctor of Philosophy is focused on preparing students to become faculty members in departments of health education, therapeutic recreation, and other related fields where the applied social-behavioral health sciences are central to the preparation of students (e.g., nursing, physical therapy, etc.). M.P.H.: Deadline for admissions is February 15 for fall and October 15
for spring. Financial Aid The Health Studies Department offers a number of teaching and research assistantships which usually carry a stipend and tuition allowance. Assistantship applications must be submitted directly to the department chair by February 15. Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Community Health Education The 45 semester-hour Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Community Health Education is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (C.E.P.H.). The program is designed to give students a working knowledge of the organization, administration, and economics of public and private health care settings; an understanding of the relationship of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior to public health; the skills to plan and implement programs using appropriate educational strategies to improve health behavior and service delivery; and the capacity to evaluate health education programs. A foundation of biostatistics and epidemiology provides students with the capacity to use the scientific literature of public health and medicine effectively. In the final year of the program, students complete an in-depth community fieldwork practicum in one of a wide range of approved local health agencies in order to gain experience in applying skills acquired in the academic program. The program may be completed in 2 academic years of full time study (4 semesters plus 1 summer session), although the program may be completed on a part-time basis. Most courses (except for the Fieldwork/Practicum) are scheduled after 4 PM, accommodating the working student. M.P.H. - M.D. and M.P.H. - D.P.M.
