Examines the social, financial, and psychological consequences of being old and female in America, along with the implications for policy and social work practice.

440. Socio-structural Foundations of Behavior. (3 s.h.)

An overview of societal and institutional forces influencing behavior in communities, groups and organizations, employing theories of power, social systems and social roles.

441. Bio-psycho-social Foundations of Behavior. (3 s.h.)

An examination of individual and family behavior over the life cycle employing theories of ego psychology and concepts from systems and role theory.

An introduction to personnel administration in social service agencies: personnel planning; employee selection and recruitment; personnel practices; compensation and benefits; performance evaluation; labor relations.

512. Clinical Practice in Service Delivery. (3 s.h.)

An advanced practice course focused on counseling, intended to help students further their understanding of various approaches to assessment and refine their interpersonal skills in relationships with clients.

514. Organizational Change. (Advanced Year 3 s.h.)

Advanced practice course focusing on organizational development and enhancement of institutional responses to client needs. Covers interdisciplinary collaboration, organizational analysis, team work, and program development.

516. Psychosocial Aspects of Aging. (3 s.h.)

Topics such as income, health, social relationships, and living arrangements are explored in relation to the needs, gaps, and social services available to older persons in America. (Gerontology Certificate Requirement.)

517. Societal Responses to Aging. (3 s.h.)

An exploration of how social institutions have responded to the needs and problems of older Americans. (Gerontology Certificate Requirement.)

519. Loss and Grief. (3 s.h.)

This course examines the dynamics of loss and mourning, societal attitudes about death, and cultural variations in dealing with loss.

522. Practice of Administration and Social Planning I. (Advanced Year 3 s.h.)

Provides theoretical underpinnings for administrative and planning practice in human service organizations, focusing on problem identification, needs assessment, governance and policy development.

523. Practice of Administration and Social Planning II. (Advanced Year 3 s.h.)

Continuation of S.A. 422 focusing on program development, implementation and evaluation.

524. Human Sexuality & Social Work. (3 s.h.)

Examines attitudes and values about sexual expression, and psychosexual development across the life cycle; topics include abortion, sex education, and birth control; implications for social work practice.

525. Developmental Disabilities. (3 s.h.)

Examines the field of mental retardation from a sociological perspective, with a focus on attitudes and stigma, deinstitutionalization, normalization, and the provision of human services for the developmentally disabled.

528. Group Work with the Elderly. (3 s.h.)

Intended for practitioners in the field of gerontology; focuses on group process skills with the elderly for self development, problem solving, social change, and the achievement of group goals. (Gerontology Certificate Requirement.)

531. Mental Health: Implications for Social Work. (3 s.h.)

The implications of mental health issues and problems for social welfare policy, service delivery systems, and social work practice in the United States.

540. Organizational Theory. (3 s.h.)

A survey of the major elements in systems organizational analysis; formal and informal systems; the nature and structure of authority; specialization and integration; the role of professionals; planned and unplanned change.

545. Supervision, Staff Development, and Training. (3 s.h.)

Examines sources of power in organizational hierarchies, alternative formats for organizational development, and supervisory and staff development practices.

548. Health Care Policy. (3 s.h.)

This course traces the history of American Health Care Policy. Current issues are studied, including AIDS, homelessness, costs, etc. The American system is compared with that of other countries.

Principles, processes, and techniques of financial management in human service organizations, including accounting concepts, fiscal control, budgeting, fund accounting, financing, and time value of money.

570. Alcoholism. (3 s.h.)

An overview of the alcoholism field, including definitions, prevention, accidents and special populations. Students visit two AA meetings.

574. Social Service Delivery Seminar. (3 s.h.)

Using a peer group consultation format, this course is intended to help service delivery students integrate practice theory and skills. Culminating seminar in the Social Service Delivery Concentration.

593. Afrocentric Social Work. (3 s.h.)

A consideration of the unique aspects of Afrocentric practice in the social work/social welfare arena.

594. Practice of Service Delivery with Individuals and Groups. (3 s.h.)

Advanced social service delivery practice content focusing particularly on practice with individuals and groups.

612. Interdisciplinary Responses to Child Abuse. (3 s.h.)

Focuses on child abuse and neglect; topics include consequences of abuse, legal controls, ethical issues in reporting abuse, ethnic and cultural issues, and interdisciplinary intervention. (Child Welfare Certificate Requirement.)

617. Psychodynamics of Race, Class and Culture. (3 s.h.)

Focuses on psychodynamic dimensions unique to particular cultural and socioeconomic groups, and their relationship to social work practice.

619. Adolescents in Crisis. (3 s.h.)

Developmental stages and issues in adolescence and their relationship to social problems.

621. Child Welfare Policy. (3 s.h.)

An overview of social welfare policies affecting children with particular attention to the problems of child abuse and neglect. (Child Welfare Certificate Requirement.)

622. Life Opportunities: Developmental Disabilities. (3 s.h.)

An interdisciplinary seminar designed to introduce students to life concerns associated with disabilities. Topics include individual preference, inclusion and self-actualization.

625. Social Planning Skills. (3 s.h.)

Designed to familiarize students with many of the technical skills necessary to be effective in the social planning arena.

626. Drug Dependency. (3 s.h.)

Examines various approaches to alcohol and drug dependency intervention and treatment, along with policies and services designed to address these problems.
