Number Required: 3
From Whom: Letters of recommendation should
be obtained from former and current professors who can provide insight
into the applicant's abilities and talents and can comment on the
applicant's aptitude for graduate study. If already working in the
field, the applicant may include letters from professional colleagues.
Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:
All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate baccalaureate degree at Temple University.
Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:
A bachelor's degree is required.
Statement of Goals:
The Statement of Goals is typically two pages in
length. It is evaluated against the program's mission. The statement
should include the following elements: your reason for seeking a
master's degree with a specific focus on the career to which you aspire;
your interests; and your academic and job-related experiences that are
relevant to the program.
Standardized Test Scores:
The GRE, GMAT, or MAT is required, although no minimum score
is specified. It is expected, however, that the scores will generally
be no less than 500 in each section of the GRE; the total GMAT score will generally be no less than 500; and the scores for the
MAT will generally be no less than the 50th percentile.
Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted:
100 iBT or 600 PBT.
A resume is required.
Courses may be transferred from an accredited
institution provided they were completed less than five years ago and
are relevant to the program. The academic advisor makes the decision
about the relevancy of the courses that the student desires to transfer.
The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 6.

Internship: No internship is required.
Language Examination: No language examination is required.
Capstone Course Sequence (AOD 9231):
The capstone course is a proseminar. In the first part of the seminar,
students are assigned to groups that function as consulting teams,
working on cases, simulations, and/or general questions provided by the
faculty. The second part of the seminar is devoted to having students
identify, develop, and complete individual learning projects. The
seminar concludes with a session in which AOD faculty provide feedback
to students. The evaluation is based both on group and individual
performance. The capstone course must be taken in the last semester of a
student's coursework and after completion of the four required AOD core
courses. Students can take only one other elective course while they
are enrolled in the capstone course.

About the Program
The master's degree in Adult and Organizational Development
integrates the theory and practice of adult learning, applied
communication, and systems dynamics in developing groups, organizations,
and communities. AOD is designed for students who aspire to be conflict
management professionals, trainers, team facilitators, and
organizational/human resource consultants. Using diverse instructional
methods, we enhance capacities for assessing and intervening in
organizational, group, and interpersonal processes through various
roles, including teaching, training, research, planning, conflict
management and dispute resolution, and consulting. The program is open
to students seeking either a first or second master's degree.
Time Limit for Degree Completion: 4 years
Students are able to complete the degree program through classes
offered after 4:30 p.m. One weekend class (AOD 9231) is required.
Students are also able to complete the degree program on a part-time
basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).
The program has a strong interdisciplinary focus.
Students are encouraged to take courses throughout the University,
especially in communication sciences, counseling psychology, educational
psychology, human resource administration, and instructional
technology. In addition, the program concentrates on applications in a
wide variety of educational settings: formal and informal; public and
private; schools and industries, etc.
The program is listed with the Organizational
Development Network and the American Society
of Training and Development.
Areas of Specialization:
The program features coursework in three areas: 1)
Adult Learning and Training, which concentrates on developing and
teaching instructional/training programs for adult personal and
professional development; 2) Organizational and Team Development, which
develops assessment, planning, facilitation, and consulting skills to
help teams and organizations design and implement change; and 3)
Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution, which involves developing
models and best practices for positive conflict cultures and third party
Graduates typically pursue careers in large private
and public organizations; firms that specialize in
training/organizational development and conflict resolution; adult
education centers; and independent practice.
Non-Matriculated Student Policy:
Students may take up to 9 credits prior to admission. In general,
all of the program's courses are open to non-matriculated students.
