Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Application Deadline:

Applications are accepted for the Fall term only. Those interested in being considered for a fellowship should submit their application by January 5.

From Whom:  Letters of recommendation should be obtained from evaluators who can provide insight into the applicant's abilities and talents, as well as comment on the applicant's aptitude for graduate study.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

No specific coursework is required for admission consideration.

Master's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

A master's degree is required to gain admission to the doctoral program.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate baccalaureate degree at Temple University.

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should be approximately 500-1,000 words in length and should include the following elements: the applicant's specific interest in Temple's program; her/his research goals; her/his future career goals; and her/his academic and research achievements.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required.  It is expected that the scores will generally be at or above the 50th percentile. 

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.

Resume:

A resume is not required but may be submitted.

General Program Requirements:

Number of Didactic Credits Required Beyond the Master's: 48

Required Courses:

Specialty Area Courses (18 s.h.) in Language Arts or TESOL

Research Methods (24 s.h.), including courses in collecting and analyzing data using both quantitative and qualitative tools as well as two 3-credit research apprenticeships in which students work closely with a faculty member.

Curriculum (3 s.h.)

Educational Psychology (3 s.h.)

Internship:  No internship is required.

Language Examination: No language examination is required.

About the Program

The Ed.D. in Curriculum, Instruction and Technology in Education in Language Arts offers specializations in Language Arts and TESOL.

Time Limit for Degree Completion: 4 years

Some elective courses are offered at the Ambler, Harrisburg, and Center City campuses.

Full-Time/Part-Time Status:

Students are able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester) through classes offered after 4:30 p.m.

Areas of Specialization:

The Ed.D. Program in Language Arts Education offers two specializations:

• The Language Arts specialization is designed to provide doctoral students with theoretical and practical tools that enable them to explore the learning and teaching of the English language in multiple settings; to engage in critical thinking about curricular and policy decisions; and to produce original research about how literacy is taught, learned, or used.
• The TESOL specialization is designed to provide doctoral students with theoretical and practical tools that enable them to produce original research on teaching and learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) and to engage in critical thinking about ESL policies and curricula.

Job Placement:

Graduates are prepared to teach language arts or English as a Second Language.

Non-Matriculated Student Policy:

Non-matriculated students may take up to 9 credits of coursework before applying to the degree program.
