Doctor in Education (Ed.D) Program in Language Arts
Program Description:
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Degree in CITE/Language Arts, has two specializations: Language Arts and TESOL.
Language Arts Specialization:
The Language Arts specialization is designed to provide doctoral students with theoretical and practical tools that enable them to explore the learning and teaching of the English language in multiple settings, to engage in critical thinking about curricular and policy decisions, and to produce original research about how literacy is taught, learned, or used.
The program coordinator is Michael W. Smith, Professor. Other faculty include Wanda Brooks, Robert Mahar, Ivan Quandt, Cathy Soundy, and Frank Sullivan.
TESOL Specialization:
The TESOL specialization is designed to provide doctoral students with theoretical and practical tools that enable them to produce original research on teaching and learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) and to engage in critical thinking about ESL policies and curricula.
Program coordinator is Dr. Aneta Pavlenko, Associate Professor of TESOL. TESOL faculty members include Drs. Yasuko Kanno, Jill Swavely, and Elvis Wagner.
Program Requirements:
A master’s degree is a prerequisite for admission to the Ed.D. in CITE program. The program requires 48 credits beyond a master’s degree. These credits include 18 credits in the specialty area (Language Arts or TESOL), 3 credits in curriculum, 3 credits in educational psychology, and 24 credits in research methods, including 6 credits in apprenticeship courses.. The course work in research methods will include courses in collecting and analyzing data using both quantitative and qualitative tools as well as two three-credit research apprenticeships in which students will be working closely with a faculty member.
Successful completion of doctoral preliminary exams, and the research, writing and defense of a dissertation are required for degree completion.
Application Requirements:
For TESOL, a pre-application interview with the faculty is required. Please contact the TESOL coordinator to schedule the interview. Applicants to the Language Arts specialization will be contacted for an interview by the faculty after applications are initially reviewed.
Deadline for applications:
January 5 (for University fellowship consideration)
February 1 for all applications
Applications are accepted for the fall term only
A complete application will include:
- GRE or MAT taken within the last 5 years. Candidates are expected to score above the 50%
- TOEFL for non-native speakers of English
- Official transcripts of all institutions of higher learning attended
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of goals
