From Whom:  Letters of recommendation should be obtained from former and current professors who can provide insight into the applicant's abilities and talents and can comment on the applicant’s aptitude for graduate study.  If already working in the field, the applicant may include letters from professional colleagues.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate baccalaureate degree at Temple University.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

While a baccalaureate degree is required, it need not be in the discipline.

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should be approximately 500-1,000 words in length and should indicate your goals and objectives for obtaining a master's degree in TESOL.  The statement should also include the following elements:  your specific interest in Temple’s program; your research goals; your future career goals; and your academic and research achievements.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required.  It is expected that the scores will generally be at or above the 50th percentile.

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 internet-based.

TESOL 612: Applied Language Study II

TESOL 614: Approaches to Teaching English Language Learners

TESOL 616: Curriculum and Assessment in TESOL

TESOL 618: Second Language Acquisition

TESOL 620: Contexts for Teaching and Learning Language

Electives (12 s.h.) are determined in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Internship:   No internship is required.

Language Examination:  No language examination is required.

Culminating Events:

Comprehensive Examination:

In order to take the comprehensive exam, the student must remain in good academic standing.  Thus, the student cannot accumulate more than two grades below B- or one F and must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

About the Program

The M.S. Ed. with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) is viewed as a master teacher program providing teachers with an opportunity for advanced study.
