Student Soloist Competition: sponsored by the Department of Instrumental Studies
The Boyer College of Music proudly announces its Thirty-Fourth Annual Student Soloist Competition sponsored by the Department of Instrumental Studies. The competition is open to all undergraduate, masters, and professional studies music students in the Boyer College. (Doctoral students are not eligible.) Candidates must be highly recommended both by their major teacher and by their department chair. Repertoire should be carefully considered as to its suitability for performance with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra or Wind Symphony. Works longer than twenty-five minutes will not be considered. It is possible that one movement from a concerto may be performed and not a complete work.
Students may audition with a piece involving symphony orchestra or wind ensemble accompaniment. If the winner performs with orchestra, the performance will take place with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra on Thursday April 3, 2014 in the Temple Performing Arts Center. If a winner is selected to perform with the Temple University Wind Symphony, the performance will take place in Fall 2014.
Each department (voice, keyboard, instrumental studies) will hold an audition within their department. The winner(s) of that competition round will then perform at the final competition scheduled for Friday, December 6.
Interested candidates must audition with the intended performance piece. Memorization is required except under special circumstances. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the applicant's department chair (in order to audition) as well as by the audition committee (in order to perform as a winner). Auditionees must provide their own accompanist for the audition. One copy of the soloist's music is required for the panel at the audition time.
