Selected topics in Art History.

5402. History of Modern Crafts and Design, Part 1   (3 s.h.)

Traces the ideas, personnel, workshops, objects and styles of the Arts & Crafts Movement from William Morris to Henry Mercer (1850s-ca. 1915), in Europe and the United States. Charles and Margaret Mackintosh in Scotland, Eliel Saarinen in Finland, Charles Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft in England, Stickley, Roycroft, Frank Lloyd Wright and Tiffany in the U.S., and other key designers/crafters of clay, metal, fiber, wood, glass will be studied. The influence of Japanese art and craft, the development of the various forms of Art Nouveau, and "Arts & Crafts" houses will also be examined.

5403. History of Modern Crafts and Design, Part 2   (3 s.h.)

Continues the study of key schools, workshops, individuals, techniques, attitudes and styles pertaining to 20th C. craft and design in the U.S. and Europe. Issues include the Bauhaus, the move to modernism, the continuing influence of Arts & Crafts ideas, the studio craft movement and gender.

Examination of various aspects of international cinema. Past and future topics include: Italian Neorealism; Third World Cinema; India-Iraq: Comparative Cinema; German Expressionist Cinema; The "Artist" in Film; Silent Cinema.

Selected Topics in 20th Century Art. Recent topics include History of Modern Graphic Design.

5462. Picasso and Modern Masters   (3 s.h.)

This course investigates the work of four major modern artists - Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp, and Brancusi and places them in a variety of cultural, social, esthetic, and historical contexts. Because the works of these artists are strongly represented in the Philadelphia Museum and in other local collections, several trips to examine work first-hand are planned.

Recent topics have been: Greek Vase Painting; Greek Architecture; Minoan and Mycenaen Art; Hellenistic and Roman Sculpture; Greek and Roman Monumental Painting; Curating an Exhibition on the History of Archaeological Illustration.

Courses taught or planned include: The Decorated Style: Architecture; Painting and Sculpture in England ca. 1240-1360; French Gothic Manuscript Illumination ca. 1200-1400; The VIsual Culture of Monasticism in Late Antique and Medieval Egypt.

Selected topics in the art of the Baroque period. Recent topics include: Style and the Historiography of Baroque Art.

Recent and planned topics include: Manet and 19th century French Criticism; Impressionism and Post-Impressionism; Pre-Raphaelite Painting; Symbolism; Depicting Race; American Cosmopolitans: Art and Modernity in the Gilded Age, 1870-1913.

8410. Seminar: Comparative Ancient Techniques   (3 s.h.)

An investigation of the methods and technology used in the ancient Mediterranean cultures of Egypt, Anatolia, Greece, and Rome to product art. Reports will cover ceramics, metalworking, jewelry making, glassmaking, painting, sculpture, weaving, architecture, lapidary, and other art forms. Presentations will sometimes be made in studies and sometimes as slide lectures.
