Communication Sciences

0410. Psycholinguistics   (3 s.h.)

presents information about the processing and use of language including language acquisition, lexical retrieval ,syntactic parsing, and language production in children and adults with normal and disordered communication systems.

0505. Issues in Linguistics   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: Ling. 501, 502 or permission of instructor.

A critical investigation of major intellectual trends in the recent history of linguistics and their relationship to contemporary issues in philosophy, psychology, and anthropology.

0506. Modern Linguistics I - Syntax   (3 s.h.)

Scientific investigation of grammatical structure in language. Data from English and other languages are used to study phrase structure, empty categories, movement, etc.

0507. Phonology I   (3 s.h.)

The nature of sound systems in human language. Students investigate data from a variety of languages and language families.

0508. Morphology   (3 s.h.)

The study of word structure in nature language is investigated with examples from a variety of languages. Students are guided toward analyzing morphological phenomena of many types.

0521. Language Disorders: The Pre-School Years   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: all prerequisites to graduate study and permission of the department.

Theoretical, research, and professional approaches to language disorders in children. Major categories of language disorder such as emotional disturbance, mental retardation, hearing loss, and learning disability are considered. Treatment and assessment techniques are reviewed and evaluated.

0522. Disorders of Articulation and Phonology: Management   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 207,208 and 233 and permission of the department.

Presentation of information and experiences to prepare the speech and language specialist to assess, diagnose and treat persons with articulation and phonology disorders.

0523. Diagnostic Process   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Diagnostic process provides the student with an orientation to the philosophy, principles, and procedures of diagnosis and appraisal in speech/language pathology. The student is also given practice in test administration and report writing. Special requirement: CS 529

0524. Therapeutic Process   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Provides information about the principles underlying the therapeutic process in the area of communication disorders and trains students in the application of these principles. The primary objective of the course is to prepare students for initial clinical training experiences in speech/language pathology. Special requirement: CS 529

0525. Fluency Disorders: Foundation and Management   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 233 and permission of department.

A survey of the facts and theories on the nature of stuttering, and a review of the principles and practices of major intervention strategies.

0526. Adult Language Disorders: Foundations   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 218, 235 and permission of the department.

Presents an overview of acquired neurogenic language disorders and the ways in which these disorders have historically been described and explained. Approaches to diagnosis and treatment of adult language disorders from structural to functional models are discussed.

0528. Voice Disorders: Theory and Analysis   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 233 and 235 and permission of the department.

To acquaint the student with the symptomatology and disorder complexes related to phonation and the philosophies and methods used in the treatment of voice disorders including cleft palate and dysphagia.

0529. Case Studies   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: Permission of department.

This seminar patterns itself on the Grand Rounds format used in hospitals in which a clinician presents information about a patient/client to a group of peers. The course is structured to provide interdisciplinary interactions because so many of the patients/clients we work with have multiple problems and solutions are usually interdisciplinary in nature.

0530. Principles of Audiology   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the department.

An introductory course in the field of audiology, including the assessment of disorders of the auditory system, acoustic measurements, testing environment and testing protocol, including electrophysiological measures, test interpretation and professional development.

0531. Applications in Audiology   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530 and permission of department.

Practical labwork with audiometric equipment, test procedures, administration interpretation, principles of case management and report writing.

0532. Rehabilitative Audiology I.   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530 and permission of the department.

Includes a study of philosophies and methodologies for improving the communication skills of both the congenitally and adventitiously hearing-impaired individual with primary emphasis focused on the optional use of the visual and auditory channels. Also includes the educational implications and emotional effects of hearing loss on individuals.

0534. American Sign Language I   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

An introductory course to provide the necessary skills for basic communication in American Sign Language. The relationship between manual and oral systems and the implications of deafness on communication are considered.

0537. Psychoacoustics   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the department.

Introduction to principles of psychophysical theory and methodology, including both the classical and modern approaches to the study of sensation. Attention ultimately limited to audition wherein the basic auditory attributes are viewed and elaborated upon, e.g., differential sensitivity, loudness, etc. More advanced topics pursued such as auditory temporality and binaural hearing phenomena.

0538. Independent Study - Comm Sci   (1-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department and instructor.

Qualified students will be permitted to conduct investigations and/or in-depth study under supervision of deparment faculty.

0603. Phonological Theory   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 507 or permission of instructor.

The formal properties of phonological operations and representations are considered, with particular emphasis on metrical structure and other suprasegmental phenomena.

0621. Basic Practicum in Diagnostic Processes   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Introduction to assessment of speech-language disorder. Emphasis on assessment tools, procedures, rationales, and interpretation.

0622. Basic Practicum in Therapy Processes   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Introduction to remediation of speech-language disorders. Emphasis on therapy methodologies and techniques, procedures, and rationales based on evidence-based practice , and analysis and interpretation of therpay outcomes.

Changing topics/semester including research protocols, research and ethics, scholarly activities, grant writing.

0624. Advanced Practicum in Voice   (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Advanced level practicum at a field affiliation or at Temple University Speech and Hearing Center (stuttering and voice disorders) with focus on in-depth diagnosis and treatment of a specific disordered population, i.e., L.D., M.R., post-CVA, stuttering, voice, hearing impairment, etc.

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Advanced level practicum at a field affiliation or at Temple University Speech and Hearing Center (stuttering and voice disorders) with focus on in-depth diagnosis and treatment of a specific disordered population, i.e., L.D., M.R., post-CVA, stuttering, voice, hearing impairment, etc.

0626. Advanced Field Practicum in Speech Language Pathology   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Advanced level practicum at a field affiliation or at Temple University Speech and Hearing Center (stuttering and voice disorders) with focus on in-depth diagnosis and treatment of a specific disordered population, i.e., L.D., M.R., post-CVA, stuttering, voice, hearing impairment, etc. On-site for two days or more.

Prerequisite: CS 530 and 531 or equivalent, and permission of department.

Basic practicum in audiology at Temple University Speech and Language Center or one of the field placements with emphasis on basic audiologic testing and interpretation.

In-depth study of child language development and/or disorders. Current trends in child language research will be the focus.

Prerequisite: permission of department and CS 532.

Basic-level practicum to expose students to the problems and therapeutic measures experienced by and available for hearing impaired individuals from childhood through adulthood in various habilitative/rehabilitative settings.

0634. American Sign Language II   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 534 and permission of the Department.

A continuation of the basic introduction to American Sign Language (CS 534)through exploration of the language used by Deaf people in America, the syntax, grammar, and vocabulary necessary in ASL. In addition various aspects of Deaf culture will also be discussed.

An overview of swallowing processes and disorders specific to the adult and pediatric populations. Assessment and treatment will be discussed.

0724. Adult Language Disorders: Management   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 526 and permission of the department.

This course builds on the theroretical foundation for acquired adult language disorders. The central theme is the evaluation and treatment of these disorders across a variety of settings with consideration given to the present climate of health care and functional outcomes.

0725. Disorders of Articulation and Phonology: Special Populations   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 522, 523 and 524 and permission of department.

Presentation of information and experiences to prepare the speech and language specialist to assess, diagnose and treat persons with articulation disorders associated with cleft palate, apraxia, dysarthria and oral myofunctional disorders.

0726. Child Language Disorders: School Age   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 521, 523 and 524 and permission of the department.

Presentation of information and specific skills to prepare the speech and language specialist to function in the educational setting in a variety of roles.

0727. Written Language Development and Disorders   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 521, 726 and permission of department.

This course focuses on the developmental processes of written language acquisition and written language disorders (dyslexia). Special attention to phonological awareness and the cognitive processes underlying this awareness.

0728. Disorders of Voice: Instrumentation and Special Populations   (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 528 and permission of the department.

Presentation of information and the development of skills in the use and interpretation of objective measures of voice. The course will focus on the development of student skills in the use of instrumentation. For this reason class enrollments are limited.

0729. Language and Deafness   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

An introduction to Deaf studies: the linguistic structure of American Sign Language, how modality of production-perception shapes language organization (comparisons of signed and spoken languages), Deaf culture, deafness and minority cultures, deafness and child development, issues and options in deaf education, deafness in old age.

0730. Clinical Audiology   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234, 530 and 531 and permission of the department. Corequisite: CS 627.

Comprehensive coverage of: hearing sensitivity, equipment calibration, room acoustics, measures of pure tone and speech sensitivity, speech recognition and loudness measures, masking, impedance/admittance, impairment/disability/handicap measurement, cerumen management, and infection control.

0731. Clinical Audiology II   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 730 and permission of the department.

Coverage of nonorganic hearing loss, diagnostic testing for auditory lesions, central auditory tests, electrophysiologic/physiologic measures of auditory and vestibular function, professional scope of practice, ethics, risk management and liability, and professional advocacy.

0732. Evoked Auditory Potentials   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the department.

Comprehensive coverage of evoked auditory potentials including electrocochleography, auditory brainstem response, middle latency responses and long latency responses including technical aspects of recording and interpreting these potentials.

0734. Hearing Aids and Amplification Systems   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530 and permission of the department.

Coverage of information on electro-acoustic characteristics and evaluation of hearing aids and assistive devices, probe tube and functional measurements of their benefit, philosophy, techniques and methods of selecting and fitting aids, hearing aid candidacy, rehabilitation after fitting.

0735. Rehabilitative Audiology II   (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530, 532 and 734 and permission of department.

Advanced issues in the field of aural (re)habilitation with emphasis on hearing aid technology, related instrumentation and interpersonal concerns are discussed.

Concentrated study of language development and disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Less biased assessment and intervention approaches are discussed.

0830. Interdisciplinary Seminar/Early Intervention   (2-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

This course focuses on preparing students to work with children from birth through six years in an interdisciplinary environment. The course meets for 40 hours during the week preceding spring semester.

In-depth experience in the speech science lab with a variety of instruments and techniques. Readings and discussions cover speech production and perception.
