Data from English and other languages are used to study phrase

data from a variety of languages and language families.

The study of word structure in nature language is investigated
with examples from a variety of languages. Students are guided

Theoretical, research, and professional approaches to language
disorders in children. Major categories of language disorder
such as emotional disturbance, mental retardation, hearing
loss, and learning disability are considered. Treatment and
assessment techniques are reviewed and evaluated.

Presentation of information and experiences to prepare the
speech and language specialist to assess, diagnose and treat
persons with articulation and phonology disorders.

Diagnostic process provides the student with an orientation
to the philosophy, principles, and procedures of diagnosis
and appraisal in speech/language pathology. The student is
also given practice in test administration and report writing.

0524. Therapeutic Process (1

Prerequisite: permission of department.
Provides information about the principles underlying the therapeutic
process in the area of communication disorders and trains students
in the application of these principles. The primary objective
of the course is to prepare students for initial clinical training
experiences in speech/language pathology. Special requirement:

A survey of the facts and theories on the nature of stuttering,
and a review of the principles and practices of major intervention
strategies.

Disorders: Foundations (2 s.h.)
Prerequisite: CS 218, 235 and permission of the department.
Presents an overview of acquired neurogenic language disorders
and the ways in which these disorders have historically been
described and explained. Approaches to diagnosis and treatment
of adult language disorders from structural to functional models
are discussed.

To acquaint the student with the symptomatology and disorder
complexes related to phonation and the philosophies and methods
used in the treatment of voice disorders including cleft palate
and dysphagia.

Prerequisite: Permission of department.
This seminar patterns itself on the Grand Rounds format used
in hospitals in which a clinician presents information about
a patient/client to a group of peers. The course is structured
to provide interdisciplinary interactions because so many of
the patients/clients we work with have multiple problems and
solutions are usually interdisciplinary in nature.

An introductory course in the field of audiology, including
the assessment of disorders of the auditory system, acoustic
measurements, testing environment and testing protocol, including
electrophysiological measures, test interpretation and professional
development.

Practical labwork with audiometric equipment, test procedures,
administration interpretation, principles of case management
and report writing.

Audiology I. (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: CS 530 and permission of the department.
Includes a study of philosophies and methodologies for improving
the communication skills of both the congenitally and adventitiously
hearing-impaired individual with primary emphasis focused on
the optional use of the visual and auditory channels. Also
includes the educational implications and emotional effects
of hearing loss on individuals.

Prerequisite: permission of department.
An introductory course to provide the necessary skills for
basic communication in American Sign Language. The relationship
between manual and oral systems and the implications of deafness
on communication are considered.
0537. Psychoacoustics (1

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the department.
Introduction to principles of psychophysical theory and methodology,
including both the classical and modern approaches to the study
of sensation. Attention ultimately limited to audition wherein
the basic auditory attributes are viewed and elaborated upon,
e.g., differential sensitivity, loudness, etc. More advanced
topics pursued such as auditory temporality and binaural hearing
phenomena.

A continuation of the basic introduction to American Sign Language
(CS 534)through exploration of the language used by Deaf people
in America, the syntax, grammar, and vocabulary necessary in
ASL. In addition various aspects of Deaf culture will also
be discussed.

This course builds on the theroretical foundation for acquired
adult language disorders. The central theme is the evaluation
and treatment of these disorders across a variety of settings
with consideration given to the present climate of health care
and functional outcomes.

This course focuses on the developmental processes of written
language acquisition and written language disorders (dyslexia).
Special attention to phonological awareness and the cognitive
processes underlying this awareness.

Presentation of information and the development of skills in
the use and interpretation of objective measures of voice.
The course will focus on the development of student skills
in the use of instrumentation. For this reason class enrollments

An introduction to Deaf studies: the linguistic structure of
American Sign Language, how modality of production-perception
shapes language organization (comparisons of signed and spoken
languages), Deaf culture, deafness and minority cultures, deafness
and child development, issues and options in deaf education,
deafness in old age.

Comprehensive coverage of: hearing sensitivity, equipment calibration,
room acoustics, measures of pure tone and speech sensitivity,
speech recognition and loudness measures, masking, impedance/admittance,
impairment/disability/handicap measurement, cerumen management,
and infection control.

Coverage of nonorganic hearing loss, diagnostic testing for
auditory lesions, central auditory tests, electrophysiologic/physiologic
measures of auditory and vestibular function, professional
scope of practice, ethics, risk management and liability, and
professional advocacy.

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the
department.
Comprehensive coverage of evoked auditory potentials including
electrocochleography, auditory brainstem response, middle latency
responses and long latency responses including technical aspects
of recording and interpreting these potentials.

Amplification Systems (3 s.h.)

Coverage of information on electro-acoustic characteristics
and evaluation of hearing aids and assistive devices, probe
tube and functional measurements of their benefit, philosophy,
techniques and methods of selecting and fitting aids, hearing
aid candidacy, rehabilitation after fitting.
