Social Administration

0401. Social Welfare Policies and Services I. (3 s.h)

An introduction to American social welfare policies and social service programs in their historical, political, economic and social context. Methods of social problem analysis. The social work profession as a social institution.

0402. Social Welfare Policies and Services II. (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: Social Administration 401

A continuation of Social Administration 401. Methods of social policy analysis and advocacy in the public policy arena, including skills in argumentation and lobbying.

0410. Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents (3 s.h)

Study of emotional, social, behavioral and developmental disorders that are prevalent during childhood. Risk factors, developmetnal pathways, co-occurring conditions and effective treatment approaches are studied.

0413. Practice of Social Service Delivery I. (3 s.h)

Focus on generalist social work practice, including work with individuals, families, small groups, communities, and organizations. Phases of the helping process, theories of practice, communication skills, social work values and ethics are studied.

0414. Practice of Social Service Delivery II. (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: SA 413

A continuation of Social Administration 413, focusing on refinement of and competence in generalist social work practice.

0420. Introduction to Social Research I (3 s.h)

An introduction to the philosophy, concepts, principles, and methods of traditional and postmodern scientific inquiry. Students will studey quantitative and qualitative approaches and will develoop a research proposal to be carried out in the second research course.

0425. Law and the Practice of Social Work (3 s.h)

Consideration of various legal issues as they pertain to the practice of social work.

0429. Foundations for Advanced Social Work Practice (5 s.h)

Prerequisite: Must be admitted to the Advanced Standing program

Foundation social work content designed specifically for advanced standing students. Integration of social welfare policy, research, social work practice, human behavior theory and field.

0440. HBSE: Individuals and Families (3 s.h)

Foundation level course in theories in human behavior designed to under gird social work practice with individuals and families. Diverse developmental theories along with psychoanalytic, social learning,cognitive-behavioral, theories of power, womanist and Africentric perspectives will be studied and critically evaluated,

0441. HBSE: Groups, Communities and Organizations (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: SA 440

Foundation level course in theories in human behavior designed to under gird social work practice with groups, organizations and communities. Diverse structures, functions, dynamics, developmental models and theories of these system levels including issues of power and empowerment will be studied and critically evaluated.

An overview of knowledge, skills, values and policy issues related to prevention and service delivery with HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons.

An independent course of study in an area of special interest. A faculty facilitator and the student work together to identify the content and design learning opportunities.

0501. Personnel Management for Nonprofit Institutions (3 s.h)

An introduction to personnel administration in social service agencies: personnel planning; employee selection and recruitment; personnel practices; compensation and benefits; performance evaluation; labor relations.

0512. Clinical Practice in Service Delivery (3 s.h)

An advanced practice course focused on counseling, intended to help students further their understanding of various approaches to assessment and refine their interpersonal skills in relationships with clients.

0514. Organizational Change (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: SA 413 and 414

Advanced practice course focusing on organizational development and enhancement of institutional responses to client needs. Covers interdisciplinary collaboration, organizational analysis, team work, and program development.

0516. Psychosocial Aspects of Aging (3 s.h)

Topics such as income, health, social relationships, and living arrangements are explored in relation to the needs, gaps, and social services available to older persons in America. (Gerontology Certificate Requirement.)

0517. Societal Responses to Aging (3 s.h)

An exploration of how social institutions have responded to the needs and problems of older Americans. (Gerontology Certificate Requirement.)

0519. Loss and Grief (3 s.h)

This course examines the dynamics of loss and mourning, societal attitudes about death, and cultural variations in dealing with loss.

0522. Practice of Administration and Social Planning I. (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: SA 413 and SA 414

Provides theoretical underpinnings for administrative and planning practice in human service organizations, focusing on problem identification, needs assessment, governance and policy development.

Prerequisite: SA522

Continuation of Social Administration 422 focusing on program development, implementation and evaluation.

0524. Human Sexuality & Social Work (3 s.h)

Examines attitudes and values about sexual expression, and psychosexual development across the life cycle; topics include abortion, sex education, and birth control; implications for social work practice.

0525. Developmental Disabilities (3 s.h)

Examines the field of mental retardation from a sociological perspective, with a focus on attitudes and stigma, deinstitutionalization, normalization, and the provision of human services for the developmentally disabled.

0531. Mental Health: Implications for Social Work (3 s.h)

The implications of mental health issues and problems for social welfare policy, service delivery systems, and social work practice in the United States.

0540. Organizational Theory (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: Prerequisites: SA 440 and 441

A survey of the major elements in systems organizational analysis; formal and informal systems; the nature and structure of authority; specialization and integration; the role of professionals; planned and unplanned change.

0545. Supervision, Staff Development, and Training (3 s.h)

Examines sources of power in organizational hierarchies,alternative formats for organizational development, and supervisory and staff development practices.

0548. Health Care Policy (3 s.h)

This course traces the history of American Health Care Policy. Current issues are studied, including AIDS, homelessness, costs, etc. The American system is compared with that of other countries.

Prerequisite: Social Administration 420

Second introductory course in research methods that will build on in the knowledge and proposal developed in the prerequisite course. Basic descriptive and inferential statistics and methods of qualitative analysis and program evaluation concepts will be covered.

Spring semester, advanced-year elective for students who wish to pursue a research project under the guidance of a member of the faculty.

Principles, processes, and techniques of financial management in human service organizations, including accounting concepts, fiscal control, budgeting, fund accounting, financing, and time value of money.

Continuation of Social Administration 566.

0570. Alcoholism (3 s.h)

An overview of the alcoholism field, including definitions, prevention, accidents and special populations. Students visit two AA meetings.

0574. Social Service Delivery Seminar (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: Co-requisite: SA 594

Using a peer group consultation format, this course is intended to help service delivery students integrate practice theory and skills. Culminating seminar in the Social Service Delivery Concentration.

A consideration of the unique aspects of Afrocentric practice in the social work/social welfare arena.

Advanced social service delivery practice content focusing particularly on practice with individuals and groups.

0612. Interdisciplinary Responses to Child Abuse (3 s.h)

Focuses on child abuse and neglect; topics include consequences of abuse, legal controls, ethical issues in reporting abuse, ethnic and cultural issues, and interdisciplinary intervention. (Child Welfare Certificate Requirement.)

0617. Psychodynamics of Race, Class and Culture (3 s.h)

Focuses on psychodynamic dimensions unique to particular cultural and socioeconomic groups, and their relationship to social work practice.

An overview of social welfare policies affecting children with particular attention to the problems of child abuse and neglect. (Child Welfare Certificate Requirement.)

Prerequisite: SA 413 and SA 414

Designed to familiarize students with many of the technical skills necessary to be effective in the social planning arena.

0626. Drug Dependency (3 s.h)

Examines various approaches to alcohol and drug dependency intervention and treatment, along with policies and services designed to address these problems.

Prerequisite: SA 625

Prepares students to work with communities and to view the neighborhood as the focus for social change efforts. Intended to increase the knowledge of community culture, dynamics, local politics and values. Students will acquire proficiency acting as community consultants.

0628. Assessment and the DSM IV (3 s.h)

The focus is on using the DSM-IV as an assessment tool and the implications for social work practice. A bio-psycho-social approach to understanding human behavior is taken.

An interdisciplinary seminar offered in collaboration with the University affiliated program on disabilities, designed to introduce and familiarize students with the impact of public policy on people with disabilities.

This course prepares students to work in an educational setting as a home and school visitor (school social worker). The focus on collaboration with school personnel, family and community resources.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a background in the field of special education and the nature of exceptionality in children and youth.
