Healthcare Management Programs are located in the department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management

0410. Clerkship (3 s.h)

(Option for healthcare management majors only. May be waived based on work experience and career goals.) Provides broad exposure to a variety of clinical and management settings in the Greater Philadelphia region. Daylong site visits by individuals and small groups with management teams in hospital, long term care, managed care, outpatient and public health are combined with guest lectures and a weekly coordinating and integrating seminar. Cross-listed with HA 542.

0500. Medical Care Organization (3 s.h)

History/development of the financing, delivery, and organization of personal health services. Needs, demands, costs, supply and distribution of professional/physical resources, and current legislation are evaluated.

0501. Health Systems Organization and Development (3s.h s.h)

This course describes and analyzes the "physiology and fluid mechanics" of national, regional and local delivery systems, exposing students to the flow of funds and the resulting patterns of use, expenditure and health outcomes in these systems. Basic epidemiological concepts and their application to population-based health management are introduced. Current regional data, live case presentations and guest lecturers will be used where appropriate to translate abstract concepts into vivid concrete realities.

0502. Management of Healthcare Organizations (3 s.h)

This course covers organizational and management theory, and the application of these principles to health services organizations. Emphasis is placed on current trends in health care organizational structure that will affect performance, quality and inter-organizational relations in the future, and the values and principles of health management as a profession. Responsibility of health systems for the health of populations as well as the provision of high quality clinical services is emphasized. The course utilizes (1) information from the textbook and current management publications, (2) guest lecturers (3) case analyses (published and live), which provide important insight into the workings of health services organizations, and (4) personal experiences of the instructors and class participants

0503. Financial Management of Health Care Organizations (3 s.h)

Current practices in financial management of health care operations, including the development of operational and capital budgets, business plans, and methods for measuring financial performance, and assessing the impact of alternative contractual arrangements with third party payers. The live cases studies will deal with the issues related to practice acquisition, and the financial insolvency of health plans and delivery systems.

0504. Healthcare Law and Information Technology (3 s.h)

This course will deal with a shifting agenda of issues faced by health care managers such as those related to acquisition of capital, assuring regulatory compliance, emerging health markets (e.g. assisted living, focused factories, etc) and health related information technology and e-commerce. The course will include live case studies and group projects related to these topics.

0510. Health Systems Organization (3 s.h)

History/development of the financing, delivery and organization of health services in the United States. The evolution of health service needs, demand, costs, supply and distribution of professional/physical resources are traced and the current transformation to risk based financing are evaluated in the light of this background. Cross-listed with HA 500.

0511. Risk Based Management of Clinical Services (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: HM 510 or permission of instructor

Introduction to the organization and management of health services. Emphasis is on the management of clinical services in office-based practice and in-patient settings with particular attention to quality assurance activities. Cross-listed with HA 511.

0528. Healthcare Information Systems (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: Business foundation classes

This course focuses on healthcare information systems. While other industries have been quick to develop information systems, the healthcare industry has lagged behind for a number of reasons that are explored in this course. The foundation of systems development is discussed along with realistic options for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries in the areas of information technologies that facilitate the integration of clinical and financial information for management decision-making and performance management purposes. HIPAA compliance, the electronic medical record among other issues is presented.

0531. Population Based Management of Health (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: HM 510, STAT 402 or 403 or permission of instructor

Epidemiological analysis of health and health services with an emphasis on assessment of cost and benefits of population based interventions. Special topics include community health assessments, the monitoring of community health indicators and the evaluation of community health improvement activities. Cross-listed with HA 501.

0532. Strategic Management of Risk Based Health Delivery Systems (3 s.h)

Prerequisite: HM 531 or permission of instructor

Course conducted through use of a computer simulation and case studies. Policy and strategic decision making for health systems managers in a risk based environment. Cross-listed with HA 521.
