PROGRAM INFORMATION

Social Work, MSW

(Concentration: Social Service Delivery )

The missions of the School are Social Administration is: • the preparation of ethical and competent social work practitioners and leaders who are committed to social and economic justice and to the eradication of barriers to the fullest development of human potential; •the provision of educational opportunities to a diverse population of students; •the preparation of advanced social work practitioners, administrationers and social planners. The faculty is actively engaged in the production of scholarship and research that contributes to the social work knowledge base and also in service related activites with relevant constituencies.

Campus Location:
Main Campus, Harrisburg

The entire MSW Program is available at both campuses but only on a part time basis in Harrisburg.

Students are able to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m. Students able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

This degree program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Areas of Specialization:
Faculty are engaged in a wide range of research from fathering, Africana social work, poverty, homelessness, child welfare, spirituality,gender, mental and physical health, and family and community violence.

Job Placement:
Graduates of the MSW program find employment in public and private social service agencies as well as in profit and non-profit organizations. Their responsibilities are far reaching, including counseling children and families, designing and implementing programs, supervision, training, advocating for and managing improved services.

Interdisciplinary Study :
Opportunities for interdisciplinary study are available in the areas of aging, women's studies and school social work.

Study Abroad:
Students are permitted to complete up to 6 credits in elective courses abroad. They should consult with their advisor about the timing of degree requirements. The Office of International Programs provides information about study abroad programs.

Licensure:
True
Licensing is not a condition of employment in Pennsylvania but is highly desirable. Some states do require a license. There are different levels of licensure that vary by state. Each state administers its own licensure examination. Graduates should contact their local NASW chapter for more information on requirements for licensing.

Non-degree Student Policy:
Depending on space availability, students may be permitted to take some courses on a non-matriculated basis. Approval from the Department Chair is required.
