Required Courses:
One Research Methods course and one statistics course are required for the master's program. Other requirements vary by program area. For the Athletic Training area, 43 total credits are required, as follows: Fall First Year - Kinesiology 442 (Physical Agents in Sports Medicine), Kinesiology 446 (AT/SM Practicum B: Experience in an Affiliated Setting), Kinesiology 649 (Seminar in AT/SM), PT 510 (Human Anatomy - Lecture), PT 512 (Human Anatomy - Laboratory), plus Kinesiology 901 (Research Methods I). Spring First Year - Kinesiology 443 (Orthopedics in AT/SM), Kinesiology 447 (AT/SM Practicum C: Experience in an Allied Setting), Kinesiology 649 (Seminar in AT/SM), EdPSy 625 (Intermediate Educational Statistics), plus Kinesiology 902 (Research Methods II). Fall Second Year - Kinesiology 410 (Exercise Physiology), Kinesiology 446 (AT/SM Practicum B: Experience in an Affiliated Setting), Kinesiology 649 (Seminar in AT/SM), Kinesiology 960 (Master's Research).

Culminating Exam Comprehensive Exam Description - If the student selects this option, he or she should be able to demonstrate competence in the general discipline of kinesiology in and in their sub-specialty area. Students complete a six hour examination, with three hours devoted to six general questions about kinesiology and three hours to two specific questions about their sub-specialty area.Comprehensive Exam Subject - General questions focus on the discipline of kinesiology and specific questions focus on the student's sub-specialty area.Comprehensive Exam Complete - At the end of their master's program (after completion of coursework).Comprehensive Exam Write - Faculty members write the questions, depending on the student's area(s) of concentration.Comprehensive Exam Grade - Evaluation is pass/fail by the faculty who write the exam questions.Comprehensive Exam Pass - Satisfactory completion of the written exam and an oral follow-up of the written exam questions with the faculty who wrote these questions.Comprehensive Exam Schedule - Scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and faculty, proctored by the faculty. For the master's program, students complete the exam in one day.Thesis
Thesis 1 - The thesis is designed to demonstrate the student's ability to collect data and present results in a scholarly manner.Thesis 2 - Students schedule a defense with their three person committee once the thesis adviser has approved the thesis as ready for the defense.Thesis 3 - Overall evaluation of pass/fail, with recommendations for improvements of the thesis as a result of faculty review and discussion at the thesis defense.Other Culminating Events
Event Description - Two other options are available: Project and Clinical Internship/Practicum. The project option is a written document, which may be a research project, literature review, program plan, etc. The project option is a three credit option. The Clinical Internship/Practicum is a 300 hour supervised applied experience. The Clinical Internship/Practicum option is a six credit option. Please note that as of Fall, 2001, the Clinical Internship/Practicum option was only available for Exercise Physiology students.Event Philosophy - The project and Clinical Internship/Practicum option provde opportunities for students who wish to engage in more applied work, in particular, to engage in these experiences. The project option is designed to provide more flexibility for students who wish to complete a written paper but not necessarily engage in research at the level expedcted for a thesis.Event Process - Evaluation of the project by a two person committee as pass/fail, based on the written document and an oral presentation. Evaulation of the Clinical Internship/Practicum experience by the major professor, based on a submitted portfolio of materials completed during the experience.
