Speech-Language-Hearing
The Department of Communication Sciences offers a Master of
Arts degree in Speech-Language-Hearing. The M.A. degree is the entry-level degree
for careers in speech-language therapy. It is designed to educate speech-language
pathologists and audiologists who can engage competently in case management with clients
representing the full spectrum of disorders across all ages in a wide variety of settings.
The M.A. degree requires a minimum of 36 semester-hours of
course work and practicum or internship. Most students complete the program in two
years of full-time study, however students enroll part-time for some or all of their
degree programs. Students who complete a school practicum and the requirements of
the program in the area of speech-language pathology would qualify to be recommended for
certification as speech-language correctionists by the state of Pennsylvania. Most
courses are offered on the Main Campus, although some courses are occasionally offered at
the Center City Campus, and internship and practicum experiences may occur anywhere in the
Delaware Valley.
The Speech-Language-Hearing program is accredited by the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and fulfills the academic and clinical
requirements for the Certificates of Clinical Competence.
