The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers Master of
Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Spanish. The M.A. program integrates the
traditional fields of Hispanic Studies (Spanish Peninsular Literature, Spanish American
Literature, and Hispanic Linguistics) providing general training for careers in secondary
education and other areas as well as for continuation in the doctoral program. The
Ph.D. program provides advanced study and research opportunities in specified areas of the
above mentioned fields with the primary goal of training professors of Spanish for
institutions of higher education.
The M.A. program consists of 30 hours of course work plus an
M.A. exam and a reading requirement in an additional foreign language. The Ph.D.
requires 63 hours of course work, a Pd.D. exam, completion of the dissertation, and a
reading requirement in two additional foreign languages. Students possessing an M.A.
in Spanish from other institutions may receive advanced standing upon entering the Ph.D.
program.
