Political Science
The Department of Political Science offers graduate work
leading to the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The department
offers opportunities for study and research in American politics and international
politics. The M.A. program is intended to provide the background necessary for
continued graduate study leading to the Ph.D., as well as to prepare students for careers
in public service, teaching at the secondary school and community college levels, and for
positions in not-for-profit and private sector firms. The aim of the Ph.D. program
is to produce university teachers and scholars to meet the increasing demand of government
and quasi-public institutions for highly qualified experts in the field.
The M.A. program requires the completion of 30 semester hours
of courses and written comprehensive examinations. The degree must be completed
within three years. The Ph.D. requires 56 credits which include six required courses
and dissertation research. A doctoral student may request up to 30 credit-hours of
advance standing for graduate work completed at Temple or at another recognized
university. Students must pass a written preliminary examination followed by
an oral final examination. After submitting an acceptable dissertation, an oral
dissertation defense must be passed. Both programs can be taken either full-time or
part-time. All classes are offered on the Main campus.
