Physics

The Department of Physics offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in several tracks, including experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics, elementary particle physics, and laser based molecular spectroscopy.  In addition, there are interdisciplinary programs such as Chemical Physics.  Graduates have continued on to careers in research, teaching, industry and high technology.

The Master's degree requires a minimum of 24 credits of course work.  Students must also pass a written examination.  The Ph.D. degree has no fixed course requirements.  Programs are arranged by students in consultation with an advisor and are subject to the approval of the Graduate Program Committee.  Students must spend at least one year of full-time residency and must teach for at least one semester.  There are also written and oral examinations.   Typical time to graduation for doctoral candidates is five to six years.  Advanced standing for work completed elsewhere is granted on a case by case basis.  Students have opportunities for study and research both on the Main campus and at national laboratories and institutes
