The Esther Boyer College of Music offers the Master of Music
Therapy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Music Therapy. The Master of Music
Therapy degree in Music Therapy is designed to provide certified or registered music
therapists with advanced clinical training, supported by studies in research, theory, and
ethics. The curriculum focuses on two areas; music medicine and music psychotherapy.
A broad range of clinical populations, orientations, practices, and research
paradigms is presented, and opportunities for self-directed learning are provided through
independent study projects. The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Therapy aims to
prepare skilled and experienced clinicians to become competent scholars who will make
significant contributions to research and theory in the field. More specific
objectives are (1) to prepare individuals to conduct research and develop theory, with
opportunities to study both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms, (2) to
provide opportunities for further development of clinical expertise in two advanced areas
of practice: Music Medicine and Music Psychotherapy, (3) to provide opportunities for
gaining expertise in an area of specialization within the above two areas of practices
and, (4) to provide opportunities to develop expertise and skill in college-teaching and
clinical supervision.
The Master of Music Therapy in Music Therapy consists of 36
credit hours of coursework ordinarily taken over a period of two years. The Doctor
of Philosophy in Music Education consists of 81 credits beyond the master's degree and is
ordinarily taken over a period of four to five years. Individuals who already hold a
master's degree may receive advanced standing for up to 30 credits. All classes are
offered on the Main campus.
The Ester Boyer College of Music is accredited by the
National Association of Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association.
