The Esther Boyer College of Music offers the Master of Music
and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Music Education. The Master of Music degree in
Education provides opportunities for advanced studies on broad-based principles and
practices in music education, theories of learning and teaching, and an introduction to
research methodology. The program is primarily intended for students intending to
pursue a Ph.D. in music education, seeking permanent certification in Pennsylvania, or
viewing the degree as terminal. The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education prepares
music educators with advanced skills in quantitative or qualitative research modes, to
effectively translate research findings into music education practice, and to develop
music education professors who can assume leadership roles in the music education
profession. The focus of music education research at Temple University tends to be
in one of the following areas of inquiry: psychology of music, measurement and evaluation
of music aptitude and achievement, supervision and administration of K-12 music programs,
philosophical or sociological schools of thought on music, contemporary computer
technology with implications for music education, and some aspect of choral conducting as
it is practiced in music education.
The Master of Music in Music Education consists of 32 credit
hours of coursework ordinarily taken over a period of two years. The Doctor of
Philosophy in Music Education consists of 60 credits beyond the master's degree and is
ordinarily taken over a period of four to five years. All classes are offered on the
Main campus.
The Ester Boyer College of Music is accredited by the
National Association of Schools of Music.
