Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers graduate work leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.  The M.A. is available in two tracks: pure and applied, each with its own core of courses and further electives to be selected in consultation with a graduate advisor.  The aim of the M.A. program is to provide students with a foundation sufficient to pursue careers in mathematics in industry, government or teaching.  The Ph.D. program prepares students for careers of research and teaching at the university level or its equivalent in institutes, national laboratories, industry and technology companies.  Department faculty are active in many research areas and increasingly emphasize an integrative role in which mathematics interacts strongly with science and computation.

The M.A. program requires a minimum of 10 graduate courses.   There are thesis and non thesis options.  The Ph.D. degree requires a minimum of 18 graduate courses, which must include a core, along with examinations and a thesis.   The target time to graduation is two years for the M.A. and five years for the Ph.D.  The programs are based on the Main campus.  Students are invited to inquire about advanced standing and part-time status.
