History
The Department of History offers both the M.A. and Ph.D.
degrees. The M.A. provides a general program in history in which the student chooses
two broadly defined fields. Within the M.A. program, in addition, there are two
specializations that prepare students for specific history careers. One is World
History as a preparation for teaching world history at the secondary school or college
level; the other is Public History as a preparation for work in museums, archives, or
similar settings. The Ph.D. is a research degree with special strengths in
Military/Diplomatic history and in American Social/Cultural history but also with
strengths in a broad range of other history fields.
The M.A. requires 30 hours of course work that include either
an M.A. thesis or an M.A. examination to complete the program. The Ph.D. does not
require a set number of course hours. The requirements, instead, include one foreign
language, a preliminary examination in four fields (one of which may be outside of
history), a dissertation prospectus, and successful defense of a doctoral dissertation
based on substantial primary research.
