Health Studies
The Department of Health Studies offers the Ph.D. degree with
distinct areas of specialization in health education and therapeutic recreation. The
Ph.D. in Health Studies prepares graduates to be independent researchers and educators in
the multidisciplinary applied social-behavioral health sciences. The academic focus
is to prepare students to integrate social and behavioral health sciences with substantive
knowledge of particular populations (e.g. children, youth, elderly) and specific
intervention modalities (e.g. patient education, therapeutic recreation).
The Ph.D. program is 82 semester hours in length and
generally takes three and a half years to complete as a full-time student. Full and
part-time options are available. Up to 30 semester hours of advanced standing may be
granted, usually for completion of a master's degree. All classes are held on
Temple's Main Campus.
