English

The Department of English offers a Ph.D. in English Literature.  To be accepted into the Ph.D. program, a student must have a B.A. in English and/or the equivalent of an undergraduate concentration in English with a broad chronological coverage.  The areas of study include English and American Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, and Cultural Studies.

The Ph.D. program is a seven-year program.  This program consists of 48 credits, at least 42 credits of course work and a minimum of 6 credits of dissertation research.  Upon completion of their coursework, the student must pass the preliminary examination and write and orally defend a dissertation.  We offer both day and evening classes to accommodate both full and part time students.   Classes are normally offered at Temple University's Main campus and Center City campus.  Upon successfully completing the program, students have obtained teaching positions in the areas of Literature, Composition, and cultural Studies; they have also found positions on editorial staffs and as professionals writers.
