Engineering
The College of Engineering offers the Ph.D. in Engineering
degree. The program is designed for students who have graduate-level training in
engineering, physical sciences or mathematics, and who wish to carry out doctoral-level
research in engineering, and pursue careers in industry, government or academia in a
high-level, creative environment. The current research interests for the degree
include, but not limited to, Advanced/Computer-Aided Manufacturing and Advanced Materials
Processing; Computer Engineering; Dynamics, Control, and Systems; Energy and Environmental
Science; Engineering Physics and Engineering Mathematics; Thermal and Fluid Science;
Signal Processing and Communication; Transportation Engineering; Bioengineering;
Construction Management and Engineering; Structural Dynamics and Engineering.
The Ph.D. in Engineering degree requires a minimum of 30
semester-hours of graduate-level courses in science, mathematics, and/or engineering
beyond the Master's degree. Students must pass a qualifying examination, which
evaluates communication, research, and information-synthesis skills, and a comprehensive
examination, which evaluates breadth in engineering/applied sciences. All Ph.D.
students must conduct independent research leading to a doctoral dissertation. Full
and part-time opportunities are available. Classes in electrical and computer
engineering are held at Fort Washington. Courses in civil and mechanical engineering
are offered at Temple's Main Campus.
