Dance
The Department of Dance offers the Master of Education,
Master of Fine Arts, and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The M.Ed. is centered in
dance education in both traditional and alternative venues. The M.F.A is centered in
Creative Process and Choreography. The Ph.D. is a research degree which embraces a
wide area of interests, but is centered in dance as a somatic and cultural entity.
All degrees contain flexibility in their content and encourage the discovery and
development of the individual voice in performance/choreography, education and
scholarship. Graduates teach in public and private settings from early childhood
through university levels, work as professional performers and choreographers and as
successful arts advocates and administrators.
The Master of Education is a 33 credit degree which combines
dance education/advocacy with creative activity, extra-departmental study and a final
project. The Master of Fine Arts is a terminal degree requiring 60 hours of study,
with a two year residency. The Ph.D. requires a minimum of 70 semester-hours of
coursework, a one to two year residency, requisite examinations, and a dissertation.
All programs are offered on the Main campus.
The Department of Dance is accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Dance.
