Criminal Justice
The Criminal Justice Department offers graduate work leading
to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The curriculum is
broad-based and interdisciplinary. The M.A. program is designed to serve as a first
stage of training for students wishing eventually to pursue more advanced graduate work,
and also to serve students who, upon graduation, will begin or rejoin professional careers
in management, administration, or specialist positions in governmental and private
criminal and juvenile justice and related agencies. The Ph.D. degree program is
designed to produce criminal justice scholars who will provide the future leadership for
the field in academia, in private and governmental research agencies, and in policy level
positions in criminal justice and related organizations.
The Master of Arts degree requires completing 30 hours of
coursework and writing a thesis or completing 36 hours of coursework. Doctoral
candidates must complete a minimum of 48 semester hours and defend their approved
dissertation. A doctoral student may request up to 30 credit-hours of advanced
standing for graduate work completed at Temple or at another recognized university.
The M.A. degree program's time limit is three years and the Ph.D. program is seven.
There are part-time and full-time options for both programs. Our advanced degree
programs are currently offered on the Main campus.
