Computer and Information Sciences

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer and Information Sciences.  The program prepares candidates for both academic and professional careers.  The three principal Ph.D. tracks are: Artificial Intelligence and Applications, Information Systems, and Software Systems. Students acquire advanced knowledge of both theory and practical skills needed for research and development work in an academic, industrial, governmental or business environment.  Research areas are flexible.  There are vast also opportunities for interdisciplinary work in applied computer science and mathematics.

The M.S. degree can be pursued for its own right or earned en route to the Ph.D.  A minimum of 27 credits are required for the M.S. in CIS.  Ph.D. applicants generally hold a master's degree in Computer or Information Sciences.  Doctoral candidates take 21 or more credits beyond the master's degree.   Typical time to graduate is 1.5 to 2 years in the M.S. program and 3 to 4 years in the Ph.D. program.  The Computer and Information Sciences program is based on the Main campus.
