Computer and Information Sciences
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers a
Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer and Information
Sciences. The program prepares candidates for both academic and professional
careers. The three principal Ph.D. tracks are: Artificial Intelligence and
Applications, Information Systems, and Software Systems. Students acquire advanced
knowledge of both theory and practical skills needed for research and development work in
an academic, industrial, governmental or business environment. Research areas are
flexible. There are vast also opportunities for interdisciplinary work in applied
computer science and mathematics.
The M.S. degree can be pursued for its own right or earned en
route to the Ph.D. A minimum of 27 credits are required for the M.S. in CIS.
Ph.D. applicants generally hold a master's degree in Computer or Information
Sciences. Doctoral candidates take 21 or more credits beyond the master's degree.
Typical time to graduate is 1.5 to 2 years in the M.S. program and 3 to 4 years in
the Ph.D. program. The Computer and Information Sciences program is based on the
Main campus.
