Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry offers the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Chemistry.  Within the program, there are several tracks: Biochemistry, Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry.  Opportunities for interdisciplinary work are available and are encouraged in many research groups.  The programs are designed to prepare students for careers in research and teaching in industrial, academic and governmental institutions and laboratories.

The master's degree offers several options and requires a minimum of about 20 credits for course and research work along with seminar participation.   Both thesis and nonthesis options are available to qualified students.   Research is a central focus of the Ph.D. program.  Teaching experience and mentoring is also provided.  Course requirements are designed to enhance the research capabilities of the candidate.  The Ph.D. degree requires a minimum of about 28 credits in basic courses, research and seminars, along with a thesis.  Typical time to graduation is two years for master's candidates and four to five years for doctoral candidates.  Advanced standing and full-time/part-time options are available to qualified students.  The programs are based on the Main campus.
